Salt & Tar: Ep.229- Bahia Tortugas

Our longest leg to date onboard Rediviva. Two days to get to Turtle Bay from San Quintin and we were able to sail a decent chunk of it! We had a great weather window and needing to time the passage of Canal de Dewey during daylight to see fishing pots meant we could chill at 3 knots around Isla Cedros. It was a needed change in events to boost our spirits. Garrett never did get much sleep underway but we had some good restful nights once we made it into port. I’m pretty sure I died a little on deck after we set the hook and before lowering the dinghy and I got some sleep! It was a great test of our team work and fortitude. I’m excited to do more overnight passages…just maybe after some real rest. Leaving San Quintin the way we did, at an emotional low, wasn’t the best start to a long trip but we got through it. We did satisfy some cravings after getting into Turtle Bay and were stoked to hang out with fellow cruisers. It really helps you forget the stress of a challenge and prepare you to do it again!

Thanks for watching!

---Some of you might recognize former crew of Delos, Brady and Blue, now Captain and First Mate of Lintika and owners of Cruiser’s Academy. What a surprise to meet people that have inspired us to share and unknowingly gave us encouragement in the roughest of the building process of Rediviva. A reminder once sailing again life is going to be SO good and here we are living it. ---

p.s. I try and reply to as many comments as I can but we are still so so busy so please do not take it personally 💕

A blown fuse usually is a symptom, not a cause...

Your choice for food reminds me of one of my favorite songs "Cheeseburger in Paradise"

Tremendously impressive video of Garrett catching up on sleep. Both the editing and music content is very professional. She looks so seaworthy, sitting on the hook. Fantastic you had a chance to relax with friends. The burgers looked very tasty combined with rings, so special! Enjoy

As a retired marine engineer I like everyone who goes to sea for a living gets used to the motions of the ship, and sleep accordingly.Bad weather and big seas does not stop slumber time, so you get on with it..because you are on watch next.Roly 🇬🇧

A couple of things that may help : watch keeping and anchoring. On the seagoing tugs Ive worked on, we kept a 2 watch system, 6hours on, 6 hrs off 24/7. Waking up at the same time everyday is less fatiguing than the rotating schedules. Usually what happens is you get a “big “ sleep your morning 5 1/2 hrs . In your afternoon a 3+ nap. The longest I’ve done is 12 weeks straight. Fatigue is dangerous and can kill you.
Anchoring: perhaps a buoy with a retrieving line would help in the future. Also think about using a snubber bridle from the Samson post out each side and well past the bob stay then attached to the rode. The full furry of a hurricane would be against the hull which is thickest at the bow rather than an unsupported roller in a few inches of critical rig. Keep up the adventure.

I am finding your travels relaxing, inspiring and at times quite humorist. You are what I like to call, Real People. A joy in all ways, and I look forward to each of your groovy sailing adventures.

As soon as you mentioned the burger I am reminded of the Jimmy Buffet song Cheeseburger in Paradise. All over the world Jimmy Buffet plays in many ships at sea.
