In this video, I talk about my top 5 tips for new diesel truck owners. Everything mentioned is what I've learned owning and maintaining my truck for the last few years:

1. Maintenance is king
2. Monitor your emissions system
3. Use an additive
4. Find a mechanic you trust
5. Drive on the highway

Here are my favorite channels for diesel pick up truck maintenance.

If you own one of these trucks, what advice would you give to someone who just purchased one?

Just did a 2000 mile round trip on the interstate out to the east coast and back in a Corvette. Thought I was cruising along fine at 75 MPH, but would always get passed by diesel pickup trucks like I was standing still. Of course I could go faster, but the trucks just want to RUN, dude. Respect!

A few more suggestions:
Change the frickin OIL! 90day or 5, 000mi. The soot and sludge buildup is incredible.
Only get diesel from a quantity dealer. Truck stops or volume sales locations.
Use high quality DEF! Also, Preston sells a DEF treatment and stabilizer. Check experation dates!
Allow engine to warm up before hard acceleration.
Use a proven fuel treatment, such as Power Service or Hot Shots Secret.

The 2012 F250 was the 6.2. It’s been a farm truck since 2015. So it’s working.

Great video. Also if you have to idle your 6.7 I advise getting a high idle switch installed. Best thing to do if you must idle for any length and f time

For #1, add cleaning your MAP sensor.

For #2, add turn on the ability to activate a manual DPF burn / turn off the auto burn. This combined with your recommendation on turning on the filter status allows you to complete a full filter burn if you're making shorter trips.

Advice, I guess just change the oil and fuel filters. If you live in the salt belt watch your transmission cooling lines. Mine just started seeping oil at 155k miles

I have a 2022 Dually, limited with 25 hundred miles sitting in my 24x30 garage. My problem is when I bought my truck, my health went down fast. So I sold the camper at a great loss. I paid 108 thousand for this truck in 2022 because of the chip shortage. So I assume, I should drive it more??? I should sell it but the value has dropped so much. I mean I would take 80 grand, I guess but I love this truck, limited with the long horn package. The factory air bags held my truck camper just fine. The guages tell me when it burns the DEF fluid off, I think I said that right. Should I sell it? My wife says yes because at my age, I'm not able to go truck camping. We don't pull anything and never have.

My advise would be do not use the engine block heater. My 2021 power stroke started on fire and burned to the ground. Cold start

as a diesel mechanic myself i wouldnt own a new diesel truck cuz they have a lot of issues with cp4 fuel pump failures and carbon soot build up on those dpf and egr is what causing these engines to wear down prematurly

I like number 5. My Power Stroke is a beast on the highway - it really likes running right at 70 mph. It sounds so good. But, also need to take care not to over do it especially whe towing loads up long steep grades.

I keep seeing videos of mechanics saying these emissions systems, especially DEF, causes unnecessary engine wear, which is why many newer trucks stop working at 100k miles or earlier, when the older trucks last well over 200k some even have over 300k miles.

This had been helpful for sure. I already know a bit of this stuff from driving MTVs and the PLS in the Army but sometime in the near future I want to have a diesel to use as a daily as well as for my future job so I am making sure to learn all I can to make it last. I made sure my almost 30 year old Toyota lasted for this long once it passed onto my hands so I want to keep that vibe going lol

Love diesel…not the price. My first diesel was a 99 F250 7.3 red crew cab. Loved that truck. I had it for 13 years. Only had 160K on it when I traded it for a gas truck. I went from smart power to dumb power. Now I have a 2020 F350 6.7L. So far I love it. Tows my dump with ease. Highway travel at 76-78mph I get around 22mpg with 1500lbs in the bed. Now when to spend lots of money on ALL fluid and ALL filter changes? I do normal service every 5K. It’s nearly at 60K. Good information thank you.

Good video. Although I own an older diesel without emissions (06 Dodge) with all diesels they need to be run and maintenance is key. Happy New Year Cheers!

Love all these comments about new diesels being trash. Its the " I walked to school up hill, both ways, in the snow, in 105° temperatures.". Bottom line, do your maintenance. Do it often. Do it early even. Lastly, if you can, you have the time, and you can follow simple instructions, do your own maintenance. Oil changes, transmission fluid, etc etc. Lastly, if you do all that, and your warranty expires, find a quality diesel place who will do a delete.

Worst thing you can do to a diesel is idle it for long periods of time, builds up a lot of carbon on the internal engine parts and also contaminates the oil.
