Couple of things I would add:

The starter itself could be worn out and produce less cranking RPMs that it should, and that could make a cold start long. I know this is kinda obvious but since starters can fail over time not suddenly, there might not be any obvious signs of sound etc.

For older cars its a good idea to cycle the glow plugs couple of times. That might be a difference between draining the battery when cranking and not being able to start at all, and starting "normally".

Great video. Keep 'em coming :)

Hi, I have got a ford galaxy 2.0 diesel auto. It starts fine in summers but in winter and temperature below 10*c it takes longer ignition to start and then smokes quite dense for a few minutes. The smoke itself shows slight blue/whitish colour but once the car warms up the move goes away. The car otherwise drives fine, has maximum possible MPG, doesn’t reduce any engine oil.. So based on above.. do you think its likely to be glowplugs ?

If the outside temp sensor damaged...would the ecu not be able to tell the glowplugs to turn on??? Thanks

Interesting and thanks. I was told by a fiend to start by testing the battery. Maybe a future video on how to test a battery and alternator is working ok? I am in Spain and have problems starting in 36oC.. as you said, extreme conditions.. further research needed

Got a new battery and glow plugs and relay, but first cold start the engine is slow cranking, seconds later or third attempt it's cranking at normal speed then it finally starts! Pretty bizarre?

Spray a bit of brake cleaner on the airfilter.
If it does start it tells you something.
