Don't forget you have to drive a diesel longer distances more regularly to keep them running well.
They're way more susceptible to damage due to short distance driving, needing a bit longer to properly warm up!

Diesels have a smaller piston but larger stroke which gives them the torque

Forgot to mention diesel burns fuel like crazy if you only drive short distances (e.g. city driving). If you drive long distances a lot, go for a diesel, if you only drive short distances, go for a petrol car.

My Renault Diesel is at 300.000km and still running fine. I like the torque and efficiency of a diesel engine. On higher speeds on the autobahn the higher efficency is even more noticable.

In terms of smoothness and overall performance, I think there are a couple inline-6 diesel engines that will be worth remembering as the most advanced, given that companies are moving away from diesel development: the BMW B57 (50d, 45d, 40d, some 30d models) and the Mercedes-Benz OM656 (some 350d and 400d models).
Honorable mention also to Audi's (VW) family of V6 and V8 now selling as 50TDI and 60TDI, and I would also say Alfa's new 2.2 aluminum block I4 diesel which is the evolutionary pinnacle of the 'Multijet', a family that made history of small diesel engines

The 300-400k comments on diesels is incredibly misleading when you consider bmw's issues (with exception to certain engines, n54, s54 etc) are not the engines. They make fantastic, usually reliable engines.
The issue with bmw's are:
1. All acessories connected to the engine.
2. Planned obsolescence with the high usage of plastics.

300k on a diesel bmw engine may be possible but half of the rest of the car will have needed to be replaced

Let me make a case for Diesel engines. The modern ones are incredibly efficient, you can coast very well(it doesn’t use any fuel when rolling, if you leave it in gear), the sensation of torque pulling you along is fantastic, and Audi won Le Mans with a Diesel a few times in a row. And you can fill up some with either processed cooking oil (it’s possible to do at home), or Jet fuel. Pretty cool engines.

Older diesel cars can also run on vegetable oil (as long as it’s clean) so they’ve got that going for them too!

I love my E39 530d. It sounds mean as hell and pulls pretty damn well, too. It is a stage 1+, tho, but still. Bulletproof, comfy, and gorgeous.

Lol as bmw technician, I would never recommend someone buy a diesel one over a petrol. Unless it’s driven and sold in the warranty period.
