If schools were about learning, there wouldn't be state exams. Learning isn't a mastery goal, you'll never learn anything with 100% certainty, you can always learn more. With exams and tests, you can learn what the correct answers are for a high value grade, that's what the school system values, showing you can answer whatever questions they give you with no regard for your comprehension.

I was never good In school but I’ve always noticed that certain people excelled because they cheated. I only realized later that I probably would have been a better student if I didn’t actually try to comprehend everything. Now I remember all the shit in Highschool biology and history that I learned because I spent time understanding it when I should’ve just cheated and got more A’s.

If you dont get a grade they hold you back its embarrassing, frustrating, and stressful on haveing to get a passing mark

school is not about learning. its about making you obedient to whoever you are gonna work with and not question anything, and to make you not creative.

In highschool when I started caring about school, my grades dropped. I went from a straight a student to mostly Cs. I went to college and it got even worse. Eventually I felt like I had to prioritize graduation and put the grades before my learning, then used whatever leftover energy I had to try and learn what I could. Not very effective. Never was bold enough to outright “cheat”, but it felt like the same thing in practice. Some of the smartest kids in my university had horrible grades, and I felt like a fraud when they would call me smart or look to me for help. Now Ive graduated and am struggling to look for work. Moral of the story is always prioritize the process first, forget the outcome. Life will reward you accordingly.

It's interesting I've been reading a lot of books about ancient scholars and how schools were back then and back then they actually tough students based on their interest and particular set of skills

The point of cheating is not only to get high grades, but to put the least amount of effort for the same result, mostly laziness

For a lot of the people I have seen; it’s not the grade, it’s the *parents*. They’re scared of either disappointing their parents, or being punished by their parents for not scoring high enough in school.(I live in a district with a lot of Asians)

oh i had to cheat through all my high school math because i simply never had good teachers. i like math when it isn’t frustratingly confusing but i’ve always barely scraped through classes because i just am slower at understanding math. ironically i got accused of cheating once but in civics which i actually excelled in and never had to study let alone cheat.

You know what’s more important to most people than learning? Getting a good job and not living in debt. Very difficult concept but college isn’t for learning it’s to get a piece of paper that says you completed a certain set of tasks and paid an amount of money and now you can enter the workforce in that field. That’s all it is. Because in reality most places couldn’t give 2 shits if you learned while in college just that you got a degree.

Its because that grade is use to measure your worth. I was denied jobs because my GPA wasn't high enough. It didn't matter that I worked sometimes multiple jobs just to cover tuition, or that I truly understood the lessons (un diagnosed test anxiety) the GPA was the only thing that truly mattered.

I speak as an American. The American department of education shouldnt be removed entirely. It sould be dismantled and remade to focus on learning rather than a grade on a paper.

theres a really interesting education 'experiment' run at reddam school in sydney. Basically, for a long time weekly exams were given to every student, and all of the marks were given to every student. for about a term in 2024 (following a pretty big cheating scandal in HSC - NSW college entry - exams), they tried not giving anyone the results, but continuing with the weekly exams. it was far more effective.

Even the word exam has strayed away from education. At first, it was a way for the system to recognize your level, providing aid for slacking students. Now examinations are basically competitions, with punishments instead of help for students who fall behind.

I cheated in algebra cause I suck at numbers. I can do the basic stuff but when you have teachers saying “you should have learned this last year” and we didn’t, then how are we supposed to keep up.
Thankfully I had a professor in college who saw I did great with writing and realized Algebra wasn’t my best subject. He gave me a C and allowed to continue through college where I finally got my bachelors.

I wish school wasn’t a time-based system for general metrics and actually focused on teaching

This why I hate school so much. Someone could cheat their way through school with straight A’s and graduate with a scholarship and as long as no one finds out they’ll be praised and rewarded for being smart. Meanwhile, a kid who is genuinely trying to learn but still gets bad grades is scolded and has less value in the eyes of the school system because the grade is all that matters. We’ve lost the whole point of having schools. It used to be about learning, and now it’s about credentials and status. One of the reasons I switched to online school was because I felt so inferior to my peers who were getting awards and being announced over the speakers as students of the month while I was in the back of the class with B’s and C’s. School isn’t about learning anymore, it’s about how willing you are to do the work. That’s how you succeed.

School isn't about learning. It's about completing tasks up to the satisfaction level of whoever determines if you did a good job or not. This then is used as a reference for future employers to attempt to figure out if you are a good worker or not when you don't have any experience. Although all of those future employers will prefer someone with experience first.

The one exception is when you are talking about some type of technical or trade type school or degree. In which case it is about learning, and most teachers will grade based on this rather than doing busy work. But these are going to all be at college level or a trade school.

There is also a tiny bit of actual learning in high school. But that is just to cover the basic things they think everyone should know. Like reading, writing, and basic math. None of those matter as much as having the teacher satisfied with the results of whatever you are doing though. This is very apparent at a high school level, by then you have the core skills, and most of what you learn won't be used later. So the primary driver is whether you complete the tasks they give you.

Yes, but the grade is to “grade” what you have learned, if you’ve learned enough, then you’ll have a high enough grade to prove you’re worthy of passing.
