I ran a 5:14 mile last summer/fall (it was a pretty easy, downhill course), now I'm aiming for sub 5:00. The race is in a month or so, I've been running a lot over the winter, about 40 miles per week. I'm starting to try to work on speed more, now that the race is soon!

ran 5:03 indoors in high school after my one and only year of cross country. Switched to the 400 and 800 after that and never ran a mile again. 100m pr was 12.2, 400 at 55 and 800 at 2:09. I know I have the speed, just need that aerobic power... time for some 400 and 800m repeats!

Hey coach, I think I’ve commented on one of your videos before. My current best for the mile is 5:37, which I ran in September, and my goal for this spring is to run 4:50 in track (I’m in 8th grade) and break my schools record. I plan on running through the winter and putting your advice into practice. I appreciate your insight as an experienced runner and I’m glad you don’t keep your knowledge to yourself.

Commenting here after breaking a 5 min Mile this morning! Out on a solo time trial I clocked a 4:53.7. Okay I'll admit, it was downhill (36m elevation loss) and there was a tailwind, but I still count this as a big win. I'm racing a Half Marathon on Sunday and this test of speed is a good boost of confidence. My target it a sub 1:20:00 (PB currently stands at 1:22:37 from 2019). Training has gone well and the course is a fast one - I'll keep you posted with how I get on.

Thank you! I'll come back to this video in the future to review your advice. I'm working toward a 5min mile.

Best I ever did was 5:04 at age 17. I'm 38 now and really want to hit this goal. It haunts me. 1 second too slow per lap. I ran a 6:11 today. I gave myself 4 minutes of rest and ran another mile in 6:14. I can't wait to break 6 and then start setting incremental goals until I get there. I've been doing endurance work for the last 6 months and only started doing speed workouts in the last 3 weeks along with mile time trials. I'm at 25-30 miles per week and hoping to bump it to to 35-40 within a month.

Last year I PR'd in the 1600m (5:07) & 3200m (11:52) in my first meet of the season! And even though I was determined to run under 5:00 it never occurred. I didn't improve on either of those times throughout the rest of the season. So I peaked at the very beginning and had worse times the rest of the season. But I ran a lot in the winter building up a great mileage base of 4-8 mile runs. I hope to train similarly this winter as I think that set me up for success last year and get sub 4:55 this season. Last year I was able to run 4.02 miles at 7:04 pace with no breaks. And 8.35 miles at 7:23 pace.

I put on spikes for the first time in my life last week and got around 4 laps in 5:05. I'm training for the longer distances but I would like to be able to increase my top-end speed in order to get down to ~4:45, another attempt at sub-5 this year though is a must.

I run off and on during the summer months, on average perhaps twice a week for 5ks. Started again recently and after 8 runs I can do 5km in 24:30. Just tried out the mile for the first time and did 6:27. I'm currently 97kg (already down 8kg from 2 months ago), 6'3 at 46 years of age - dropping my weight back down to 82 which I was about 15 years ago should bring me to about 5:30. Hopefully with better training I would be able to close the gap to 5:00. Wish me luck!

This was a great video, I enjoyed it very much. Thank you, what is your advice for appropriate warm up and cool down exercises, stretching?, And also, how does one do strides? I hear about doing strides all the time yet I have no idea what they are, thank you.

Thanks for the video! How important is core for running the 5 minute mile? How much should I do it? Going for 5 mins from 5:41 (set last year)! Not sure what my mile time is yet but I’ve improve a lot over the summer and am looking to become even better.

Thanks for the feedback! That brings another question to mind about training paces. When I am doing a specific track workout, do I run the paces I want to run or the paces that I can run currently? thanks again

I'm gonna try and do it before 2023!

Hi been watching ur videos and i have a question. So i had ran a all out mile in 3 months, my mile pr is 5:32 . In the 3 months i hadn’t ran a all out mile i was base building for xc, so instead of doing 2 track sessions a week i did one. And with one less speed workout a week i was still able to run 5:38 . How low do u think i could run by end of spring track . I am back to speed work 2x a week

Hey Nathan! I was wondering about my training for 5k. I know this isn't related to the video as much but I thought this would be best to get some feedback. My sophomore cross country season just ended and I'm planning on doing a lot of training in the off-season (I finished with a pr of 18:44). I am planning on consistently doing around 60 miles a week with long runs, tempos, and interval workouts you've talked about. I want to be around the low 17 to high 16 minute area the next season. Are there any changes or tweaks you would do to my training to help me reach my goal? Is my goal even achievable with the training I plan to do? Thanks!

Can u make a video on mileage levels for middle school runners? I have no idea the range I should be running since I’m only in 7th grade
