5:05 is beastly man, especially with no training and on concrete. You’ve got sub 5 no doubt.

Bro runs a mile faster than my 40 yard dash

Try it on the track next time for sure and maybe do a few miler track workouts beforehand to get your body prepped. 6x1000m is a classic, also 3x (400, 200, 200) w/ 1 minute rest between intervals and full recovery between sets. Good luck!

5:05 is a beastly mile time. To think that there are 8th graders who get sub 5 min mile times is crazy

From the appearance you didn't look to be doing but maybe a 6 minute mile, or even less.

You HAVE to be on a track to be accurate & pace properly.

Parking lot is too imprecise.

I ran 4 years track & cross country, was 3rd man of 12.

Nobody w/o serious training & pacing practice in a group setting - accidentally runs a sub 5 mile - maybe some freakishly great athlete in some other endurance sport could, but that'd be VERY rare.

My PR was 4:55 as a Senior and our best guy was hitting 4:20 - school record there - he would blow me away.

To help us achieve our fastest mile our coach would have us - 10 or 12 guys run back to back 6 / 75 second quarters - a 5 minute mile is 4 of those consecutively.

Even that isn't enough leg speed work to achieve 5 minutes !

Ergo, he'd then 😮 ask for 3 quarters (1 full lap ) at 70 seconds (4:40 mile pace) with 60 seconds rest in-between.

Then he'd finish with like: run 1 quarter as fast as possible - I "think" one time I managed a 63 second one time but nearly puked after.

Even our champ would MAYBE do 59 or 60 at that point.

I always tried for 65 seconds on that last one.

My all time best quarter mile in an actual race was a mere 58 seconds which means I was no sprinter.

I did manage a 2:09 half mile 880 & a 36:00 10k road race & 17:30 5k cross country.

Running with 2 significantly faster teammates made me faster trying to keep up.

I the end, I figured I was my own competition, trying to better myself.

Keep up the good work !

I’ve been trying to hit sub 5:00 this track season and have been stuck at 5:04, praying for the sub 5:00 tomorrow at my last meet 🙏

I was around where you were (5:05) racing in alphaflys myself, but switching to spikes got me down to 4:52 pr this season. Its totally doable with clunky marathon shoes but if you are willing to spend the 100$ or so to get some spikes you will definitely have it. Plus, you can use your spikes for the occasional speed workout if you get them.

This is how I felt going into track season after just finishing a half marathon 2 weeks before 😂

You’re did great for not knowing the best way to pace since you weren’t on a track! I’m trying to go sub 5 by the end of my sophomore year in high school, it’s currently the end of my freshman year and I ran a 5:25 halfway through track season. I haven’t timed my mile since then, but I feel like I could have ran sub 5:20.

I’ve been trying to go sub 5 this year in track and finally did it about 3 weeks ago with a 4:58 but the last 2 meets I’ve been getting 5:02 for both

Edit: now my pr is 4:43

I am a long distance swimmer and can relate to how hard it feels when trying to go for shorter distances. Well done man .

I ran a 4:58 when I was 38 and I got kidney damage. Had to go to rehab with an IV for 10 days.

Best workouts to get sub 5 imo are 12x400m at around 5 min mile pace. This should feel easy since you do marathon training. 3xmile at around 2 mile pace, but since you don't know your 2 mile pace I'd say go around 5:30-5:45 pace. Then another really good workout is 6x800m at a little slower than goal mile pace, so maybe at around 2:35-2:40 per 800m. I felt the results of these workouts the most during my training and ran a 4:52 off of these workouts.
