I Trained 8 Weeks to Run a 5 Minute Mile

How fast can you get after 8 weeks of training? *disclaimer* I am NOT a professional and this is NOT medical or training advice!

Running is a huge passion of mine but I've never pushed myself in the sport, nor have I ever learned how to run properly. The heel striking was intense at the start of this challenge my guy. In order to even try to hit a sub 5 minute mile I had to learn how to warm up properly, how to increase my mileage safely and that it's okay to pace yourself.

My training plan was pretty simple for this challenge I pushed myself pretty hard for the majority of my runs, going at about 80% race pace. I also had a couple easy days every week. When I felt off I would take the day off. But when I was running I was running hard. If you want a full break down of my training comment below! But for me a lot of it was mental. Just forcing myself to get up and run hard as often as I could. Running 3-5 miles and not going for those longer 10 mile runs. Which were super fun but my body just wasn't ready for that kind of distance. Also I had to get new shoes too. Proper equipment is super important to prevent injury.

I really just hope this inspires people to go run after their goals. Even if you don't reach them you're gonna get close. :)

Professional former high school track kid. SWEET improvement in that limited time frame. My recommendations would be to alter the training schedule though. Especially in the beginning you need to schedule rest days. Two long runs a week is also bad for your knees and shins in the early stages of training.
At school we used to run 5 miles (day 1), speed work (day 2), 5 miles (day 3), hills (day 4), easy 3 miles and core work (day 5), 10 mile long run or race (day 6), rest day (day 7), repeat.
You didn't show much but stretching before and after the work out along with light intermittent core work is also very important.

Again tho that was incredible improvement in just 8 weeks (also pretty sweet cinematography too)

Your comments at the end of the last mile you ran setting a new PR sent me to one of your fist vids about "The Boy Who Lived." I just gotta say, your passion in your vids grabbed my attention and helped me to reflect if I am living deliberately. Thanks for putting your soul in these.

Wind sprints are not that useful in training for a 1600 race. You are supposed to to do like 4-8 strides 20 seconds strides after an easy day run after words just to lightly get your legs feeling that speed. Instead you need to do interval work and tempo runs. Also just one long run a week is all that’s needed.

I’m a 15 year old girl and I started at a 9:13 minute mile, and after a few months I got it down to 6:49.

So happy for you and inspired to witness your journey. You did remarkably well shaving off more than a minute in just 8 weeks - WOW! Congrats🎉💕🎉

As a 4:40 miler, I would do 8x400 runs with 1:15 breaks at race pace about 2 times a week. Game changer

I remember when I was 20/21 I wanted to see how fast I could run a mile if I worked on it. I was on the slower end of the class in grade school (I remember being at like 8:45 in junior high, and I was average or lean weight wise) so I know I don't have talent in this area. I did speed work, longer runs, worked out my legs a lot, but the main thing I did was run miles as fast as I could, regularly. The main thing that kept happening was needing a really slow 3rd lap and over time that 3rd lap slowdown got less pronounced. After about 4 months I eventually hit 5:57. I joined a track club in Boston and trained for 400m/800m, though I never competed, and I never did fast miles again after my 5:57, but I was so proud of myself. Nowadays 20 years later, I have trouble breaking 10 minutes despite running regularly. But watching this video reminded me of that push and how great it feels to break 6 min and how fast it feels, I can't even imagine breaking 5 let alone 4.

Good job! I went from 5:42 to a 5:12 in 2 months

Good job man great improvement!, I would recommend wearing shorts and taking off hoody on your next attempt… that could shave off a significant amount of time, also try incorporating some 400s and tempo workouts you’ll be there in no time. Again great job!

Very high quality video and great improvement on your mile time 👍

Why are wearing sweatpants and jacket to run your fastest mile. I honestly think you could hit 5:35 or 5:30 if you just wearing short running shorts.

Not only is the improvement impressive, but this is probably the most well made video I’ve seen with under 100 likes. I don’t comment this type of stuff much either 💀
