This is the exact information tutors must tell every student in the very first meeting of every course at college. Very helpful

This is so relatable. I finished my bachelors in architecture and I faced the exact same issues during my college days. I guess its the same case with any design course.

It just all depends if you’re passionate about the field or not. I’m a senior currently at WVU. For people who say it’s a lot of time and it’s not manageable it is not true, I’ve worked almost full time the past four years and still managed time for school, work and a social life. As for it being expensive that is true freshman year it was 500 dollars in pencils, trace paper and so on. But after that everything was on computer. It’s like any other major, if you like it it’ll be easy. If not then it’ll suck!

Appreciate the insight Carter! As a prospectus student, I'm interested in the drawings you mentioned (biomorphic/geomorphic and rectilinear) that you mentioned and how it played a role in informing your design process. Could you maybe do a video on what it's about?

Subbed and thanks!

so i’m not in landscape arch., but i’m a landscape design major (my university separates the two) so if people are a tad intimidated but still have a passion for designing landscapes, i would like to recommend trying to find a program at school that focuses more on residential design. landscape architecture is more on par with urban planning, therefore dealing with HUGE spaces. if that isn’t for you but you still have a passion for this, i am very happy with my course of study and just wanted to recommend it as an option!

Hi Carter, it's great connecting with you. I'm from Vietnam and I'm studying landscape architecture. As a third year student, I realized that this major is meaningful, I mean for the relationship between mother nature and human. But, I consider that I am a dreamer or not.
Can you recommend some books or give me some advice for improving myself, to be a realist, or support study. May I become an intern at any landscape studio or study specialized books.

Thanks a lot and have a nice day, Carter ☺️

All very good points Carter, the profession is not easy and its not for the faint of heart, if you're a wimp try music appreciation instead. I remember being in the studio on Saturdays when most of the student body was at a home football game in the stadium while me and 15 of my classmates were hard at work doing design and construction drawings (utilities, highways, drainage ways, parking lots, golf courses, etc.) or building those topographic models as you mentioned, I got to hate cardboard after awhile. Also you need to develop that thick skin because your designs will be critiqued by professors and fellow students, but as you said its just a matter of opinion unless you did something egregiously wrong. Regarding working on a team, its challenging, but my 44 year career put me on numerous teams of 8-10 professionals from a myriad of fields who were all dedicated to producing quality work for the public and I learned a lot every day from those people. By the way, you can make 6$$$ figures in this profession, just work hard and wisely. Thanks Carter, good video.

Hi, so I'm a 19 year old girl, that still don't know what to pursue in the future. I've seen both of your videos about why I SHOULD and SHOULDN'T become a landscape architect, but I'm still not quite sure. I suffer from severe social anxiety, and I'm not the best at math, but I'm very creative and would like to make a difference for the environment (I like to learn about plants especially and have throughout my school years been interested in climate change and so on..)
I just don't know if I'll be able to handle the stress you mentioned, or if this is even the field I should be looking into. But it also just sounds so interesting! So yeah, I'm confused :( Do you have any idea if this is something I should really consider, or if there's something else in my field of interest that would be better suited for someone like me?

The top disadvantage is that they make you hand draw stuff for over 70 percent of the time. Just know how to do Civil 3D and illustrator. That’s all firms care about, and maybe Sketchup and Lumion.

Thanks for these informative videos. Taking the long road to earning my associates in L.A. . With a full time job, I’m learning on the side, but with that said, there’s one caveat that’s making me from making a full time plunge and that’s “Pay scale”. There’s a lack of salary information on a majority of job postings for Landscape Designers and Landscape Architects. What is a typical starting wage in your experience (regions pay differ) and what does a typical L.A. further along in their career make?

Sheesh. Great video! Any recommendations for outsiders joining this field from another industry?

If you want to study anything that has the word architecture in it, be sure to be proficient at drawing and art before starting, that knowledge will save you lots of time.
All those studies are very expensive in materials and time. Oh and critics are mostly toxic, but I found that this is less and less the case.

Oh and I am an architect, here to learn a bit more about landscape architecture to complement my skill set. One really needs to be as flexible as possible these days.
