Before anyone tries this, if your radio has a security code make sure you know what it is. Not sure BMWs have this, mine doesn't. But I know a lot of other cars such as the Ford Galaxy do. The code should be in your handbook.

On a side note, if you're changing the battery of a car, you should use jump leads or crocodile clips and tape attached to the new battery connectors and the car's connectors before you remove it. Then once the old battery is out, lower the new one in while trying to keep it connected still. This will keep all the computers in the car powered, and save you from having to enter in your PINs or set your time.

I think what it does mate is reset all of its emissions, air to fuel values, timing and bring that back to default settings. This is why it prob runs smoothly once after the disconnect.

Hi George have a 2012 f30 with aftermarket headlights keep getting headlight aim failure which has never been able to reset I tried getting the person who mapped my car to clear these messages cause it was an old fault with one of the leveling motors in one of the old halogen headlamps. My question being would this be a safe and effective procedure given these circumstances with the start stop battery? The after market lights have passed MOTs no problem the guy who mapped the car said the ECU might be detecting a difference in resistance/voltage hence flagging up messages. He cleared the messages with his diagnostics but came back on again pretty soon after.

Thank you George for your brilliant video which helped tremendously. Today my car a BMW 1 series mk1 E87 N47 diesel 118d, developed serious electrical faults where the indicators are not working and the high bean head lights are continuously on. My friend's fault code reader light up with so many faults which he was unable to fix the issues! So I followed this video disconnected the battery, shorted the cables, waited 10 minutes and then reconnected the battery cables and started the car and it worked and all electrical faults were gone and car runs better than before as you have said in the video!

The only other fault I have with the engine is the oil level sensor, do you know how to change it out?
