Anger can bubble up in all of us to the point where we can’t keep it from showing. So what can you do to prevent yourself from boiling over? Dr. Henry Cloud wants to share some tips on how to understand and mitigate your anger. Did you know that just by naming that feeling of anger you start controlling it? When you attach language to your emotions you can bring in higher level regulatory functions that the emotions alone do not have at their disposal. That’s just one part of the great advice Dr. Cloud shares in this video.

Caller Question:
“I have a short temper and I often wind up alienating myself from others because I am quick to get angry. It's probably affecting my blood pressure (which is high) and my overall mental health, and obviously the quality of my relationships too. Even when I try to suppress my anger, I find myself acting in a passive aggressive way. How can I learn to control my anger before it controls me?”

I remember putting my daughter in time out, but she refused to stay there. I had to physically stand there and hold her in time out. Then she tried to destroy everything around her WHILE she was in time out! It was hell for both of us, and it accomplished ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Whew! Still recall that 35 years later. Oh my!!!

Interesting concept re. language. I was recently in the doctor's surgery and the receptionist refused to let me order indulin for my type 1 diabetes. I couod feel the onset of fight or flight so I said, 'I am feeling really anxious as i would die without insulin'. I was offered a seat, but not insulin. I didn't losey temper but o didn't get what I needed until I complained. I had to inject my sister's insulin in the meantime. When the practice manager contacted me she acknowledged my anxiety and that the situation should not have arisen. Had she been defensive or raised excuses, i wouod probably have epically lost it.

The more time you spend in quiet time with God reading his word- over time, the less and less angry we become. But the first thing we need to do is give our lives over to the Lord Jesus Christ - and let Him be the one to change us.
