2. Without money, even the most brilliant student can't do anything.

I totally agree about Communication. It is key.
I have given up trying to get my supervisor to remember me, but after a year I think I have discovered who it actually matters who needs to be impressed.
The Academic Board.
At the university at which I am registered, they assess PhD students frequently and regularly. They are only interested in a) have you paid your fees? b) will you finish in the time span?
So communication needs to be demonstrable. Write, write and write. Then you have something to wave in their faces to persuade them you are meeting the timetable.
And as you so righly say, Talk, talk and talk.
Present your work confidently and with purpose. To reassure them you have something to say.
Your supervisor does not mark your dissertation. Don't hand them more power than they actually have!
