Clicker Training Your Cat!

I’m a huge fan of clicker training - I even have a shelter-based program called Cat Pawsitive that helps cats become more adoptable, secure, confident and more bonded with humans. Folks are often amazed at how easy it is to get their cats started - and thanks to my good friend and Cat Pawsitive trainer/mentor Samantha Bell, we will show you in this video. Get ready to high five your cat - and more!

Mmmm... treats!

A few comments: 1. You don’t need a clicker. You need any short sound that is consistent (you’ll make it the same way every time) and distinctive (you’ll never make it in any other context). I trained my cats by making a short high-pitched “boop!” noise. You can use words, but cats are not as good at understanding human languages as people are, so the specific words may not be as distinctive from all of the other words you use in your everyday life.

2. Training cats to come running to you expecting treats at a particular sound (I use “pss pss” for this) is a basic safety measure. If they get outside, or if you really need to find them ASAP because you’re late for the vet appointment, having a way to get them to come when called is super-helpful.

3. Another really important concept from operant conditioning that dog clicker trainers use that I don’t see mentioned here is “variable ratio reinforcement.” Once you get the cat very used to the idea that the sound means that they will get a treat, you can start gradually dropping it back wind *not* giving a treat every single time you make the sound. It works like a slot machine - they never know when it will pay off but it pays off often enough that they keep coming back, and you have less difficulty with satiation. The sound or the petting or the play becomes the stand-in for the treat itself. Variable ratio reinforcement is actually *more* effective than constant reinforcement.

Cat training is super easy! Mine had me trained in less than a week and I only got scratched once!

I clickertrained my cat. We both loved it! 💙 Once I took care of some friend's chicken for a week and I clickertrained one hen - I called her Hjördis. It worked really well. We both liked it. The other day I visited the hens and guess who came running, Hjördis! She still remembered one year later and evidently has good vibes about the whole thing. 💕

Quarentine is the best time to try out clicker training haha. I taught my cat sit, high five, low five, and 'stop' so she pauses in place. I had roommates confront me about not wanting her in the kitchen, shooing didn't work, but clicker training did. She know's exactly where the perimeter is to not step into the kitchen, now she leaves me alone when I prep her food too.

I didn’t use a clicker but I have taught my cats to sit, shake, up, and round using treats. Cats really are very smart and happy to learn!

When I got my kitten my whole family thought it was stupid that I was teaching my cat to sit. This kitty is over a year old, he knows how hard he is allowed to bite during play, he sits and waits for food instead of just taking it off my plate, he comes when I call him, and he knows what 'leave it' means. Is he perfectly obedient? NO. Cats are even more stubborn than dogs and where a well-loved dog will do anything to please their pet parent, a cat can be like a toddler, they know the rules but sometimes they just want to throw the ball in the house when mom isn't looking. Clicker training is awesome and my cat loves knowing how to communicate with me.

I already had a clicker so I decided to give it a try with my two cats. Ivan, the older cat, learned how to sit in less than five minutes. Freya is an older kitten who is easily distracted but she caught on soon after Ivan. I can’t wait until tomorrow’s session with my brilliant fuzz friends!

I learned my cat to sit in three seconds. It’s like he instantly understood. He loved doing the trick again and again. I don’t have a clicker yet. In the evening I fetch him food in the bowl. Turn around. There, he looks at me very happy and sits. “Mum! This is what we learned today right?”. This is the most intelligent cat I have ever met. I look forward teaching him tricks and getting him some intelligent games.

I did this to leash train both my cats. It’s never too late to start them on it! Hunter is gonna be 15 in June! And Cecil’s gonna be a year this month! Looks like we needa start working on tricks next! ^^

I really liked teaching my cat a different kind of clicker training. We did regular clicker training (mouth sounds) but then I had a different click that I used as a kind of "Marco Polo" where I'd click lighter and repeatedly. Faster and louder when she gets close to the Macguffin, and a high pitched "Nope" if she went the wrong direction. She'd start scanning left to right to get the right clicks before going. Eventually I could hide treats around the house and clicker her around to the hidden treats and loud click when she got it. She *loved* it, vibrating tails, falling on the ground for some floor cuddles.

Interviewing on Monday for a job at an animal shelter in my city. Hopefully I will get the job and will have the opportunity to train the cats and dogs there to make them more adoptable.

Clicker training is undoubtfuly useful to both turn your cat into a rock star as well as to change / encourage behaviors we want from them. Also, you'll see how the ability to communicate with them, will also transform the bond with your cat!

Her smile is contagious! I found myself smiling the whole time she was training. I do a lot of animal training working at the zoo with conservation species, but I’m awful at articulating the components of training. She did such an amazing job!!

I never had a clicker, but my boy had the sweetest move that I never associated with kitties..he would give paw just like a dog when he was hungry (he was an outdoor community cat). I just melted every time he gave paw...RIP, my honey man. Great video, Samantha, and your kitties are amazing!😽
