I never intended to train my cat but he knows how to wait for his food. It just started with me wanting him to stop running for the bowl while I was preparing his dinner. After a while of me blocking his way and saying "wait" he would give up and sit and wait on his own. Eventually he would automatically sit and wait every time I told him to at dinner time.
