I dont think being a teacher and mentor came across as naturally with Obiwan than it did with Qui-gon. With Obiwan it seemed forced and cold. Anakin was a very emotional person and Qui-gon could make someone understand as well as acknowledge their emotions. Qui-gon was a perfect mentor for Anakin and when he died there was a huge instability left over. I love the videos keep making them

Letting go is something I’ve struggled with. I feel like George and Star Wars has really helped me with that. If things were meant to happen differently they would’ve. Nothing I can do or try to do will fix it. The best thing to do is to let go and be at peace and embrace the things I can’t control. The more you try to change your outcomes, the worse the situation and you will become.

Regarding Obi-Wan not being 'good enough' to train Anakin, there’s an interesting piece of dialogue in the Episode III Game for PS2 between them during their duel on Mustafar:
Obi-Wan: "I only wanted what was best for you, Anakin! I wasn’t prepared to train… someone like you!"
Anakin: "That’s your failing, not mine."
Obi-Wan: "Perhaps I did fail you… but I won’t abandon you to the Dark Side!"
Anakin: "That's not your decision to make!"
Obi-Wan failed Anakin as a student, but beyond that, the dark side gave him 'comfort' during his most difficult times, whereas the light side and the Jedi did not.
When Shmi died, the dark side gave him power, which was taken from his anger and sadness. When Dooku taunted Anakin about being too weak and not using the dark side to defeat him, the dark side gave Anakin the strength he needed to beat Dooku through his anger. After Qui-Gon died, the one man who acted like a 'father' figure to Anakin was Palpatine, the sith lord, not his master, Obi-Wan, nor Mace, nor Yoda.

I was only 2 years old when Phantom premiered in ‘99. Still remember the first time watching any of it. Not in theater, parents were too closed minded, wanting me to focus on sports as a child. I was around 5. Laying on my stomach, with head propped up by my arms and a big ass pillow, at my cousins house. And thus began my super Uber dooper love and passion for this universe, taking me in and not able to ever get enough.

August 15th 2008 I went to see in theater the rough clone wars movie. But Shortly before my 11th bday on October 3rd, 2008, The Clone Wars season one episode one premiered. My single mother of two raised us and knew my love for it. She let me watch it in her big room on her huuuge 36” round screen tv lol. I’ll never forget the first episode with Yoda and a few clones mowing through droids to get to King Katuunko and Ventress.

Now I’m 25 and haven’t lost the love. However, I must admit, you really see things differently every year you watch. As in, bc you’ve had some real life experiences and can connect things differently.

But mannn what I wouldn’t give to go back to being that child and not worried about anything in life and just watching for first time.

I love Star Wars

My gosh, this made my eyes watery, and I never cry, literally. This is ridiculously beautiful and explains more things than people realize. It also shows how much Lucas respects the audience's intelligence. He literally showed instead of having characters to tell those things. He assumed people were smart enough to catch.
Personally, even as a new Star Wars fan, I never took the Jedi teachings of no attachment as this sort of "indifference" or "lack of love" that I see some people saying. As George said, I've always seen it as being OPEN to love, but not getting attached to the point of having your own rational decisions compromised by you not being able to control it as you think you can. Also that makes perfect sense that Anakin had to be way younger even if that was happening in real life; a kid absorbs the world around them pretty easily and they have no filter on how much or who until they're old enough to distinguish those things. That's definitely what happened to Anakin. He was totally hypnotized by Padme right when he first saw her so when he least expected he was deeply in love with her and that only grew stronger in him and her. Even though he was too old to be trained, the fact that he was still young enough not to be able to judge those feelings rationally was definitely what made it hard for him to resist the dark side as an adult, since the attachment was absolutely rooted in literally who he was as a person, something much more than just the act of love(even though he "beat the devil" in the end).
To me this Idea that the Jedi ideals themselves are to blame for everything is said by people who hate the Jedi. George Lucas is naming names, respecting the individuality of the characters. This franchise keeps surprising me. I wish I was a fan way earlier, even though I kinda was of Episode 1 when I was a little kid, totally obsessed with the race and everything about the movie, but then I completely grew out of it(I have no idea why), until recently that through the Mandalorian I met Ahsoka, which made me watch the Clone Wars and that made me re-watch everything and I finally understood. I have watched all the movies years before because a friend made me do it, but it's like I was totally disconnected from it. It was only after watching Mando, Clone Wars and then re-watching everything in chronological order that the essence of Star Wars reached me. I even felt very nostalgic watching Episode 1, which I have already watched years before but it had no effect on my childhood remembrances. I guess I watched with what I call lack of will. And I always loved science and space, but I always hated movies about that, with great exceptions, so maybe that's why I was so disconnected when watching them before. Star Wars literally changed my whole view on movies about space and aliens. I'll probably never have this lack of will/effort watching any movie about space or alien again. Also I was younger and my interests were different . It's not that I changed much, I don't even like this idea of changing for the sake of changing, it's more harmful to oneself than people think, but I definitely like way more things than I did before, specially in music.

Anakin is my favorite character in Star Wars because I relate to him the most. Letting go of attachments and being strong enough to not fall for the temptations of the dark side speak out to me and I struggle with it everyday. This was a very interesting insight about the character as a whole

I really enjoy listening to what george lucas has to say about star wars. He provides some insight into the franchise that you can't really get from anyone or anywhere else.

Growing up as a kid, I only understood the starwars story thru the ps2 lego games. I didn't even know what a 'george lucas' was XD But now that I'm much older, I've been so interested in rewatching the movies, learning the lore, and staying up-to-date with star wars related news.

Clone wars was probably my most favorite journey thru the star wars story, and finding out how much george was involved in the production really helps me understand his vision, as well as how he directs/manages his projects.

Now that I've finally found your channel after all these years, I've seen clips of George discussing star wars at forums and interviews that I never new existed, and hearing what he has to say has been enjoyable and fueled my interest in learning more.

Thanks for using your channel to reawaken my love for star wars, and I look forward to your next video 👍

Anakin was the best character in all of star wars, also the most tragic. Can't believe how bad disney ruined his arc

Jake Lloyd was a really good fit for Young Anakin. going from him to Hayden felt natural imo

I thought the kid Anakin Skywalker was just perfect
I thought the direction George was going with was that he's so full of life and ambitions despite being a slave with a very limited life, very innocent but at the same time almost as understanding as an adult, and the kid acted the way he was asked, if he wasn't good they wouldn't have chose him to play the character

A really cool synopsis there at the end about Qui-Gon being the father figure that was needed since Obi Wan famously references Anakin as his brother. It’s very hard as a sibling to also be a parent in the real world. A testament to Obi not being “enough” of a proper model for Anakin.

That's a fascinating anecdote from George Lucas & the Prequels are peppered with lines of dialogue supporting this. Even as far back as when Anakin said to his mum 'I don't want things to change'. I don't know if Qui-Gon alone could have prevented Anakin's fall but if they'd managed to take Shmi with them, it certainly could have turned out differently, as far as his decisions went. It may not have stopped order 66 & the rise of the Empire, but then the OT would have been about Anakin becoming so powerful and killing off the Emperor as well as potentially restoring the republic to its former glory. All that said though, how do we explain that Dooku also turned despite being raised as a jedi from a young age - and by Yoda?

I wish George Lucas would be like how George RR Martin picks the writers for T.V Series based on his books and he advises them on the writing, I feel like that's how it should be, but also having writers that try to push the franchise forward instead of being too Conservative and Strict, move in the direction that George Lucas advises them, use George's ideas and build on where George wants the story to go

Big props on articulating the Jedi's wisdom about how nothings permanent. The difference between "no attachments" and "must let things go if need"

Hugeee difference

Can you explain how Luke starting his training even later in life worked out just fine, compared to Anikan.
The only people he ever knew as parents were brutally killed and after a minute, Luke seemed just fine.

I don’t think it was Obi Wans entire fault, he was responsable to an extent, but at the end, Anakin made his choice. Obi Wan was too young to become a master, and at least he did his best and managed to become a brother figure to Anakin. Anakin is to blame in part, because he was also manipulated, the Jedi as well. The Sith pulled the strings and the Jedi were vulnerable because of their dogmatic views, their blind faith in the Republic, etc. It is complicated, and I love that it is so. I love Star Wars.

I’m a Christian just to point out and I have a strong sadness to Anakins story and especially fall. No one could have played Anakin better than Hayden and Loyd. Also a huge fan of dune and even though ST is based a lot on dune I think it’s a much more beautiful story and dune is more of a lesson. Great video SWT

I don’t think Anakin was taken to late at the time of being taken because he had formed an early attachment to Master Qui Gon. Anakin could sense that Qui Gon cared about him through his actions and words. He even noticed that Qui Gon had his back and support to train as a Jedi in front of the Jedi Council. Even though leaving his mother and other attachments on Tatooine was hard, I truly believe he knew Qui Gon had his best interest at heart. He could sense it. I also believed he could sense ObiWan not being a fan of his earlier on.
