Yoda’s cryptic statement, “No, there is another,” in The Empire Strikes Back fascinated fans of the early 80s. But George Lucas’s early vision for this was not to reveal Leia as Luke’s sister.

In an interview, Lucas said, “If you’ve got a hero, what you want to do is make him vulnerable… And when I said, ‘There is another,’ it basically signaled to the audience that I could kill Luke.” Lucas wanted to create genuine tension and suspense, ensuring that audiences would remain on the edge of their seats. Interestingly, when Lucas first conceived this idea, he intended for Luke to have a twin sister who was not Leia. This mysterious sibling was supposed to be the focus of another episode. However, after the production of Empire, Lucas felt burned out and decided not to pursue his planned sequel trilogy, and he resolved the identity of the “other” as Leia becoming Luke’s twin sister in Return of the Jedi.

Dont get me wrong, the revelation on Leia being Luke's sister i can imagine made others feel icky but im willing to excuse it and have a headcanon that both just laughed it off after finding out about one another as sister and brother

I love how his burned out throw in at the last minute idea was still better than most of the intentional writing in movies today 😆

Off topic, but I just now realized that leia’s hairstyle while leaving cloud city is very similar to depa bilaba’s hairstyle!

It annoys me how some Sequel Trilogy fans are saying that Yoda was talking about Rey. He obviously meant Leia.

"Nellith Skywalker", the original twin name.

Leia became his twin out of laziness lol

Vader/Anakin could have also worked. He was the chosen one after all

Edit : Now that I think about it, Vader defeated the emperor in the end so yeah even if it wasn’t the original plan it works great

To be fair, Lucas establish Lea as a force user later that movie, so the narrative that Lucas had completely different plans could be just as wrong as that he had all planned ahead. More likely he just hadn’t made the FINAL decision yet.

In hindsight, "There is another, " when referring to Leia, makes no sense. Leia, the very same Leia whom Yoda concedes may need to be sacrificed just minutes prior?

I think it all worked out nicely. Episodes 1 thru 6 is a great story.

"Who's this 'another' going to be, George?"
"Ugh. I don't know. I had this whole other idea for a new twin character, but I'm tired. That's too much to write out."
"Yeah. When I get tired, I rest."
*George's eyes open wide* "What did you just say?"
"I said I rest!"
"In...rest. In...ces..." *runs to his typewriter*

Honestly it's pretty clear Leia wasn't the "other hope" considering that at that moment, Yoda knew Luke was leaving to try to save her life.

Maybe we didn't get to see the last half of Yoda's sentence. "No, there is another... but soon likely dead she will be as well."

If Disney gone with George Lucases ideas the sequels would have been great

If you think about it, Leia being attracted to Luke without knowing they are siblings is actually pretty logical. Usually people of very close DNA can bond quickly and if you include the Force, both can feel a desire to be close to each-other. Without knowing they are siblings, there is nothing stopping the sexual attraction in addition to the the mental attraction and desire to be close and care for each-other.

I completely believe this. I was around when the OT first opened. And that reveal felt so wrong at the time. Like a last-minute fix. Many didn’t like it.

Now I really want to see a what if Leia was the main protagonist of ot.

So basically he just didn’t feel like making a new character and decided to just use a character he already had. That’s pretty understandable but it still just made the rest of the movies not make as much sense in the long run. Making Leia be Luke’s sister created so many plot holes, like why didn’t Obi-wan didn’t tell Luke? Or why couldn’t Vader sense her connection to the force and relation to himself in all of their encounters? It probably would have been better to just leave his sister a mystery that didn’t need to be resolved but could still be told in later movies if he ever decided to come back to it. But it probably would have been really annoying for fans if he left the series on such a big cliffhanger for so long.

I'm so tired of fans thinking he did have all these plot points worked out beforehand. They were winging it the whole way.
