Did I mention I talk with my hands? :)

This tag was created by Brittany at Slanted Spines:

Questions:
1. Do you consider yourself a mood reader?
2. Do you set TBR lists and do you stick to them?
3. Do books affect you emotionally? Does the mood of a book rub off on you?
4. When you’re feeling sad, what do you read? (Or do you not read when sad?)
5. Most often, do you use reading to escape, to learn, or to critically reflect?
6. What is a book that made you laugh out loud?
7. What is a book that has made you cry? Or, if you don’t cry, one that really moved you?
8. What is a book that you didn’t even know how you felt about?
9. Are you more likely to read on a sunny day or a cloudy day?
10. Do you usually “set the mood” when you read? Music, lights, smells, etc?
11. Can you leap from book to book or do you need buffer time between them?

You can check out my video on Nick Hornby's Polysyllabic Spree series here:

Other books mentioned:
Chosen by a Horse by Susan Richards
The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead

I suggest Jazz as a compromise music to set the reading mood.😂🤣😂🤣

Quarterly TBRs? A good idea but I need to tie myself down a bit more.

I’ve never even thought of setting the mood to read. There are specific places in my house that I read, but I don’t need to change the atmosphere.

This is a great tag! I’ve really been struggling with TBRs this year, too. As for question no. 5, I mostly read to escape, but I’m not opposed to learning or critically reflecting. lol Question no. 11, the only way I usually “set the mood” while reading is to listen to an ASMR/background noise video while reading. During the colder months, it’s usually the sound of a roaring fire while during the spring and summer, it’s usually a thunderstorm/rainstorm video. And sometimes I prefer silence while reading (moreso if I’m reading in the evenings after coming home from work). I can’t get too cozy while I’m trying to read because then I’ll start falling asleep. 😂

Hey Kelly, Neat topic here and fun responses. I feel similarly on some. Your response to the 9th one made me laugh. :-)
I feel like I can answer most of these...
1. Yes, totally! I'm a "Mood everything". :-D Almost anything I do, save for something obligatory, is dictated by one's mood in the moment.
2.Nope...and nope....Just a stack of books I ignore...until I don't, haha.
3.Oh yes. I'm far more emotional than I appear on the surface and certain things I'm reading can set that tone for the rest of the day. 4.Depends to what degree...Sometimes will read certain things to cheer me up, otherwise I don't read anything for a while.
5.Hmm...I never cared for the term 'escape'...maybe 'insulate' would be better...but yes, it's often all these things, especially since I favor memoir, biographies...I feel a good one really covers all those aspects too.
6.'Reality is what you can get away with' by Robert Anton Wilson. Open up to any page and it's complete hysterical madness!
7. 'A pause in the rain' by Joy Greenberg. Anyone who knows the story knows how it ends....but when you're actually reading it in such detail, woo boy!
8. Can't think of any offhand...If I've finished the book, it either strongly resonated or not much at all.
9. Doesn't matter much, though on a sunny day I'll tend to want to read outside. :-)
10.Oh yes...I do this with just about anything. Reading, viewing, listening to music....I often have both the incense and candles going. Unless I'm watching something I typically have music playing....since 95% or so is instrumental....that's rarely a problem.... ;-)
11.All depends on..well, you know....mood.... :-D
Fun stuff again here. Thanks for sharing, and hope you're having a lovely Sunday as much as possible. -Carm

I am working my way through my watch-later finally. My apologies for the delay. Your comments about Underground Railroad are interesting—and when I read it, I wondered how it would seem to folks who aren’t southern historians. (I definitely agree with Courtney.). Thank you for your kind words.

Question five is really interesting. I've never had to think of whether I read for any of those 3 reasons before... It's got me scratching my head! 🤔

I've been doing a lot of "going rogue" from my monthly TBRs lately, but I really need to stop checking out books from the library and read the ones I already have. 😂
To me, The Underground Railroad is more a novel of ideas than a character-driven book, even though we follow Cora throughout the novel as she travels from state to state. Each state is its own self-contained world, not meant to be historically accurate, but representative of values and beliefs that were held during the antebellum period.

To set the mood, I tend to like to have a favourite beverage...coffee in the morning...tea or hot chocolate through the day, a glass of wine or two in the evening perhaps. my TBR is a lost cause due to booktube, I rely on booktube events to work through my TBR. so many books, so little time.

I also don't burn candles very often, because my cats seems to have a radar for when candles are lit, and then I have to spend the whole time keeping their tails away from the flame. Not very conducive to reading. If I'm in the living room I like to put on a lofi stream, or some kind of coffee shop ambiance video on YouTube. It's not critical, but that does also signal to my husband that I am in reading mode and he is not welcome to start watching a tv show lol.

Some interesting questions here, will have a think.
I used to have a Persian cat and without thinking one night I prepared a candlelit dinner for my partner. Bad idea! Cat's tail 🔥 (he was fine though!)
Oh, and thanks for the tag!

I really liked some parts of The Underground Railroad, but overall it was just okay, I don't understand at all the hype it received. Fine story, nothing more.

No mood setting for me, just a sofa, a hot water bottle, tea and chocolate, not necessarily in that order 😉 but no music, or background noise except maybe the hummingbirds fighting q
