How Do Amish Pray?

Amish people have rules and traditions about everything it seems. They even have traditions when it comes to prayer. The Amish women have to have their head covered, and the Amish men have to have their head uncovered. They either read from a prayer book in German or they do a silent prayer. No prayers out loud in their own words. It is always the man of the house or the preacher/ bishop who does the praying.

I thought every Amish person could read and understand German… I learned something new. 😊

That's so sad. I think of all the times my parents prayed over and for us kids for specific things.

My Great Grandmother always prayed in German at family gatherings, she wasn't Amish, German was her language. I had no idea what she said but it was nice. Her name was Rose 🌹

Interesting! Thanks for letting us in to a world closed to most of us.

Observant Jews also use prayer books, called a siddur in Hebrew. Is the Amish prayerbook you used growing up the same for every family/community/church district? With us, there are countless versions of our siddur.

It sounds like the Amish have forgotten a lot from their ancestors.

As Christian Orthodox, we cover our heads too, for women. It's a beautiful tradition. I would never walk in any church without the head cover. We also cross our chests. Glory to God ❤

Baptist pray from the heart throughout the day as needed. Heb 4 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Interesting. Love how the father gathered the family that’s a very good thing. We need more men like this. But out loud prayers is the best 😢

Its very nice but there is so much more to God! You can ask Him anything according to His will and He will respond. Bless you my sister ❤

I did not know that about the Amish community. That is very interesting. I think that prayer should be out loud more and should be from the heart not just from a book.

Jews and most Christians have prayer books. Right now sitting beside me is my Episcopal Book of Common Prayer.

Has nobody thought to translate it?

That's sad that they never pray their own words...

It’s sad that all who critique this young ladies life of virtue, prayer and modesty, bear no fruit in theya day to day lives. Far from what they claim, Christian in name, atheist in practice. But jump at the chance to have an opinion on a strangers life that’s light years ahead of their own, in terms of piety.

I’m a bit confused by the wording here:
You say there is never any reading out loud, in their own words, but they read from a book..
Does that mean the family, as well as the church literally sit in silence with no words being spoken out loud?

Anyway…
I didn’t know I needed to know about Amish faith until you popped up here.
I lived my whole life near to Amish country in PA and my grandmother and I used to pick up baskets from a few families to sell for them at flea markets; yet I still didn’t never asked the questions I am now curious about.

Pretty neat, thanks for sharing to all us outsiders. I may not know much but I do know I’ll always have the utmost respect for your people

If you need, The Valley of Vision has prayers by many of the Puritans and it can be a helpful tool to incorporate into your prayer life. It can be hard to learn how to pray if you've not been accustomed to it! I find them to been very rich for the heart, soul, and mind.

I would like you to read a copy of the Amish Prayer book that was published in English and get your take on it. It's so sad that certain Ordnungs completely lost the purpose of the faith. I loved the idea of being Amish when I was a child. I know the reality is much different that how I imagined it, but for those who understand the German I'm sure it's meaningful. We stayed with a New Order Amish family and they prayed in English.

Yep, it's all done reparative and meaningless! I married an X Amish guy, unfortunately I learned the hardest way how they lived. 26yrs marriage was ruined by how this X Amish viewed the love of a Father, it's not accounting the truths of the one true Lord God's word. Prayerfully and with great sorrow, May these people realize it's not what you do or don't do ITS what God has done for each and everyone of us that gets us to heaven! He has forgiven you! Loves you even while you are sinners, Christ died and rose again that you may have life and have it more abundantly! ❤😢❤

Is it Germanic German or is it "Pennsylvania Dutch" German, in the Amish Prayer book?
