There is a reason behind this, not because he is not a Muslim, but because the Jewish used to say Al-saam alaikum (death be upon you) instead of saying Assalamu Alaikum (peace be upon you)...So Muslims at the time of the Prophet PBUH were not able to differentiate between those who honored them with the true Islamic greeting and those with bad intentions, so they would respond to them by saying: Wa Alaikum (And upon you).

So ignorant, the reason this tradition is because the jews were not willing to give salam to the muslims in the time of the prophet, they would say sama alaikum (death upon you) so prophet taught the muslims to say walaikum (and you) so ball is upto the jews if they want to give peace, muslims will give them the peace back, and if they want to curse, then muslims will give them the curse back, there is literally no inherent racism involved from the muslim side for this tradition, the jews can only blame their ancestors for being arrogant and not accepting the prophet of God whose coming was mentioned in the old testament, and the knowledge of which their ancestors knew, which is y they settled in yathrib (medina) in the first place

Bro, that Muslim doesn’t not know the Hadith properly. In the Hadith a Jewish man greeted the prophet pbuh with “Assamu Alaikum” so Assam instead of Assalam. This means “Death be upon you”. Therefore, the Hadith teaches us to reply to any person that greets with you with Assamu Alaikum with Walaikum which mean “to you too”. It’s not racist or devicive at all. Alhamdulillah
