Every Naruto fan knows the legendary sannin are extremely powerful, but there is often a reaction by Naruto fans to call Jiraiya the strongest sannin and Tsunade the weakest of the sannin, but a close read of the series actually reveals that fans of the naruto franchise might have actually overlooked the power increases that the other two legendary sannin got after jiraiya's death that puts them firmly ahead of jiraiya in power, but how much stronger than Jiraiya did the other two get? Lol, so what's the point of this explanation then!? Jiraiya was the strongest of all 3 when he was alive, he died, other 2 surpassed him over time. Same as Naruto surpassing Jiraiya with sage mode after his death, Sasuke surpasses Itachi after his death with Itachi's eyes implanted. Sakura eventually surpasses her teacher Tsunade. Think it would be safe to assume that Jiraiya would've stayed the strongest if he stayed alive and got stronger overtime but he needed to die for Naruto to grow.

Side note: Tsunade always had that healing jutsu that creates the diamond shape on her forehead. She would've also used it during the pain arc but she spent almost all her chakra healing everyone she could in the village hence why it vanished when Pain did he bigger almighty push version.

Well now we know in the Boruto Era that Orochimaru surpassed them but originally they all cancel out each other thats why they are the three way deadlock. So Tsunade can defeat orochimaru but Jiraya can defeat Tsunade and Orochimaru can defeat jiraya. The snake is afraid of the slug but the frog is afraid of the snake but can defeat the slug thats the folklore their characters are derived from. people may say jiraya wasnt the perfect sage but in his imperfect sage he has alot of toad acts that only he could do with high level offensive ninjutsu must if these attacks Naruto couldn't do and if he was alive long enough he could've mastered sage justs fully.

Personally I feel if Tsunade had shown some feats using her elemental abilities and was as fast as the other 2 she’d probably top off. This in combination with having arguably the best chakra control (jaraiya might take this idk) of the 3 is wild. She has the highest base strength as-is. She has 4 chakra natures, but it’s never shown in the anime (or manga I believe), immense chakra pools, instant regen, if she was able to rearrange nerve endings quickly like she did to Kabuto and deal a single blow there would be no fight. I feel Tsunade was done DIRTY compared to the other 2 since the beginning.

We all know that Jiraiya was the strongest of them 3 until his death. He was holding back against orochimaru when they fought cuz he was still trying to bring him back to the village just like Naruto and Sasuke. Orochimaru didn't stand a change against Itachi while itachi ran from Jiraiya even though he was with Kisame. Orochimaru got destroyed by one almighty push from Nagato. And Jiraiya fought all 6 path of pain and was able to kill 3 of them. Nagato stated that if he knew their secret Jiraiya would've won that fight. So no argument here, Jiraiya was and will always be the best R.I.P. to Pervy Sage.

Orochimaru being basically unkillable is a crazy feat. Sure hes weak to genjutsu and sealing but otherwise, good luck. Should have been the final villain imo.

Tsunade is the strongest in base and in full power. Her attacks and jutsus don't require prep like the other sannin. Hers are instantaneous and 1 hit kos. Plus Katsuyu just adds to her kit as well.

Orochimarus best quality was the fact that he was near unkillable, could survive almost anything and if compromised, could use his body replacement technique to literally materialise a brand new body, leaving the injured/maimed one behind as an old shell.

It's literally the most broken regenerative ability in the series and rivals what Hashirama was able to accomplish with medical ninjitsu

Jiraiya would have gotten stronger too if he never died. Most likely much stronger than the other two because he would have been progressing right next to naruto. I wouldn’t be surprised if naruto helped him active Perfect Sage transformation too.
Notice how even with their power-ups, Jiraiya is still mentioned as the strongest Sannin despite being dead. Even though they clearly surpassed him, his potential while he was alive was greater than theirs.
(Ps. I love Orochimaru but most of his progression doesn’t come from training, so I can’t respect it fully. And Tsunade has Senju & Uzumaki blood, so my bar for her is extremely high.)

War arc was a hot mess though, especially with power scaling going nuts.

What's worse is that people think Orochimaru would allow the pervy sage to enter sage mode ignoring him not attacking and holding his hands together similar to frieza thinking goku was praying when creating the spirit bomb. Even if that happened Orochimaru would definitely kill ma or pa on his shoulder before their annoying song was prepared.
