I work in healthcare and deal with insurance billing as part of my job, and what you’re describing about insurance companies dragging their feet about payments and pre-approvals sounds just like nearly every insurance company I’ve ever worked with state-side. It’s important to remember that insurance companies make money by not paying claims! It is in their best financial interest for you to get so discouraged by how long it takes to get reimbursed or to get pre-approved for a procedure that you either put it off or decide not to go through with it. Throwing up hurdles like needing patient intervention to speed things along, piling on documentation requirements or flat out denying necessary treatments on technicalities is shady tactics they all engage in. Some companies are more brazen than others, but I’ve yet to deal with a company that doesn’t do this stuff at least some of the time.

I used to work in medical billing for hospitals & doctors offices and dealing with insurance companies can be rather difficult on our end. Some insurance companies won’t even talk to us, so yes, it’s usually faster if you (their customer) deal with insurance companies yourself. They technically work for you, since you’re paying them, whereas they don’t work for hospitals or doctors. Just one way of looking as to why insurance companies tend to take their time when dealing with medical staff. Also, this is based off my experience in the US, so I don’t know how other countries handle their insurance to hospital relationships.

After viewing things and reading your blog I will see which company is most suitable for half the year geezer travellers. Most insurance seems to cater to those who go on short trips (under 3 months), who are young (under 60) and who travel for the whole year. Haven't yet found a plan suitable for those 65+, who leave Canada/USA for six months every year and have even one pre-existing condition (even if all they want protection from is car accidents, serious illness etc - you know *big stuff*.
