Why I Quit SafetyWing Travel Insurance

I finally called it quits after 5 years of using SafetyWing Nomad insurance.

While it is still the best travel insurance for "normal" travelers, in my opinion — I found a better travel insurance plan that is more comprehensive that helps me sleep better at night.

UPDATE: The "normal" Nomad Insurance has now been updated to a Nomad 2.0 version. This new version is slightly more expensive, but it has $0 deductible instead of $250.

Heyo! Mitch and Day here 👋🏼

We’re just your typical American-Colombian couple determined to live every second of our precious time here on earth to the fullest. After a 10-month solo backpacking trip through South America, I (Mitch) stopped in Cali, Colombia to take salsa dancing classes 💃🏻. I only planned to stay for a couple weeks, but God had other plans for me. I met a cute Colombian girl (Day) in class, those couple weeks turned into a couple years, and before we knew it...we were married 👰🏻🤵🏼

Now we’re traveling the world full time as digital nomads, supporting ourselves by working online 👨‍💻👩‍💻

Our goal with these videos is to inspire you to step outside your comfort zone, give you an inside peek at our crazy imperfect lives, and show you that you don’t have to be rich to live an extraordinary life...all you need to do is make the choice!

Cancer treatment is free in most EU countries. Breaks my heart that people would have to deal with the cancer diagnosis and their bank accounts being destroyed too.

Useful advice, thanks. What can you share about an International Health Plan for Long Term (annual plan) senior travelers especially with new rules in Schengen area?

Your insights about quitting SafetyWing Travel Insurance are really valuable. It's enlightening to hear about your experience with the new Nomad Health plan and how it compared to the normal Nomad insurance. The cost and age cut-off certainly seem like important factors to consider. Thanks for sharing your perspective and helping others make informed decisions!

I quite enjoy the information you share about insurance options for nomads and other travelers. Self-insuring and obtaining health literacy still has a lot of value especially given that the market trend right now is to deny coverage even though coverage was implied. Cancer perhaps less common and less of an issue than major trauma or a life-long autoimmune condition.

Thanks for the video. Do they give you a card which hospitals can use to bill the insurance directly or do I have to pay and then submit for reimbursement ? Thank you

how is that better than, e.g. coverwise annual subscription, which covers medical expenses up 20 MLN dollars?

The problem is that they don't cover people over 69.

Oddly, allergies are excluded. I have terrible allergies and don’t care about insurance for regular type treatments but what if I had an anaphylactic allergic reaction to something I wasn’t aware of? I’d have to go to hospital for treatment and they wouldn’t cover it?? Seems weird that it wouldn’t be covered.

Can you compare Foyer Global Health with your insurance?

If I am still a resident of the US but am traveling full time, I do not qualify? Are you no longer a legal resident of the US? Thanks!!

They define residence as the country where you reside for 183 days or more in a year. I don’t live anywhere for 183 in a year.

They want $291 a month, that’s expensive living in Colombia where everything is super cheap

Health insurance is a huge rip off. Self insure is the way to go. Get the most basic insurance for accidents, but for anything really serious, fly home and get treatment there. The caveat being IF you're fit to fly home. That will depend on how pro-active you are with screening. Get yourself checked regularly.

I have had nothing but a horrible experience with this company. Hope this comment will save some of you the headaches, loss of sleep, and grey hairs I have gotten. No one takes any responsibility.
