Are Coding Bootcamps Worth It?

Today we are discussing whether or not coding bootcamps are worth it in 2019. As a staff software engineer who has worked with many coding bootcamp graduates I'm in a unique position to provide insight into what works out really well with coding bootcamps along with where they fall short. I'll give a definitive yes/no answer as to whether or not bootcamps for software engineering are worth it along with a bonus tip for how to pick the right one.

I have a degree in electronic communications engineering. Never worked in that field, went to do work more related to Industrial electrical/electronics engineering, PLC etc, then finally switched to software side of things altogether.

Working at a Fortune 500 SaaS company as a Staff Engineer now, however I still struggle with impostor syndrome despite having experience in wide variety of fields.

When I was younger, always thought doing a degree in CS would help with that, now I’m not so sure. As you age, there will be cognitive decline and you will lose interest in doing certain things. One has a stomach for only so many JIRA tickets. Now I’m thinking what’s next and whether I should worry for more than the imposter syndrome.

university/college boot camps vs Organizations(like Coding Dojo, Altcademy)

Do there tend to be different focuses in the course types? Or is one seen more “prestigious” over the other?

I currently am planning on going to Vanderbilt in Nashville TN. It’s a full stack 6 month boot camp and I’m wanting to be a software engineer. Any chance you could look at it and give me some feedback?

Hey Cody thanks for the info. I am currently a painter but I want a career switch I live in Seattle, WA there is a coding boot camp provided by University of Washington I was thinking of attending (they don't have much financial help) or coding dojo on site (payment plans are better but not sure if its as prestigious), do you think either would be a good camp? is it realistic to get a job after doing a boot camp with no previous experience if you do well?
