Bootcamps are a scam! Here's Why

The INSANELY high price of $10k to $40k and the 6-month curriculum are psychological marketing tactics to trick you into thinking you'll get more value than you would from an online course. But that's not true.

The "we'll help you land a job" is another trick to make you think $10k+ is a reasonable price, because hey, "I'll have help landing a job"! But if you read the fine print, all the "help" you're really getting is access to yet another job board.

You can get a new job by learning new skills online FOR FREE. And if you are someone who truly needs guidance, take an online course for a couple hundred and then use LinkedIn.

I have my own *free* data analytics course in my profile, as well as a paid option for if you need guidance (it's $249, which is 40x to 160x cheaper than a bootcamp, and most people finish in under 6 *weeks*, not months.)

Please don't get scammed by a bootcamp! #scam #bootcamp #dataanalytics #careeradvice #career #onlinecourses #educational #learn #beware #money #learn #education #makemoney

Edit: people aren't reading my reply below; I dropped d/t the edX format was not for me

Well, i just signed up for one, so ill check back in 6mo i guess.

The reason I did was because i cannot learn on my own, i need structure. The stuff I looked at which was self paced, i knew i wouldnt do.

The friend i have who has a job in IT already did boot camp and felt it was a good value.

Some bootcamps charge a smaller tuition, then help find you a job and take a portion of your initial salary - thereby putting everyone on the same side of the table. They're not all scams.

Learning to be a full stack developer definitely takes more than six months 😊

Man self taught or bootcamps. If you got no hustle in you to get a job then it doesn't matter what you learn. I'm a truck driver and if you don't look for a job you won't find. I'm getting into Bootcamp. It takes grit to finish skill learning. No school you go to will prepare you for the real world. In fact the real world is always less demanding than school. Learn a skill get the job and learn the company's way. That is how it works. It's never the same

I am in a paid internship right now because of the free online resources here on Youtube university. Literally everything single thing I got for my career change was based off of me creating a small business (digital), creating my own brand (most i paid was like $30 for domain and host provider. There are even free domains and hosting out there. I just wanted to look more professional. Let me tell you a key hint, have an idea or plan and then the answer to all your individual questions are found on the internet but if you go out finding out what you should do, that’s when the scams start. Have an idea of your own and the internet will help you make that happen but don’t use the internet to give you an idea.

boot camps don't really teach you anything beyond the barest of minimums you can learn for free on youtube or documentation.

Also, their ads are just terrible actors saying "Oh, I make $200k a year now" It was so easy! 👎🏻

Thank you so much for helping me not go down that rabbit hole (after just seeing an ad) as someone who would love to help my husband change jobs (we run a cleaning business) I appreciate this video so much!!!

Oh, and one other thing: if anyone EVER promises to “give” or “get” you a job, run! Hiring is WAY too personal and individual of a decision involving too many factors for anyone to ever just hand you out like Halloween candy.

There are bootcamp curriculums on Udemy too. With the frequent sales, a bootcamp-level course on Udemy can cost lesser than a meal. And, you can take the classes anytime of the day and anywhere, stop, rewind, repeat, etc.

A friend hosted a career fair on his Software group and we did a mock interview. We had about 30 code camp grads. So the Senior Devs, we all asked very basic question that would be asked for an entry level role. A majority could not answer the most basic questions. Several could.

The ones who could past the questions all had one thing in common. They could problem solve. They also are working on a personal project and build apps alone or with little help but independently.

The ones who struggled with the questions? They were not problem solvers. They sounded like people who did the minimal to pass a test and they copy and pasted or got answers from friends. That is my theory I don't know but it was dismal. I asked alot of very simple easy questions they acted shocked on why they would be asked these questions.

I also noticed, none code as a hobby after their code camp was over. they struggle weeks, months or even years. No personal project idea, no project with friends or non profits, no fun ideas for relative. Nothing. They just open their books closed it and stop learning and complain why companies won't give them a chance. I'm sorry but I want to see evidence that you care about the field. I want to hear about that dream app you are trying to make and you are having good and challenging moments and how you "solve challenges".

Do you think artificial intelligence will affect job opportunities for people that only know SQL and Tableau?

What do you make of some bootcamps claiming a high employment rate like 87%?

Look at paid apprenticeships or self taught skills and build a resume there
