Ram Setu was first mentioned in Valmiki’s Ramayana, a Hindu epic. The bridge is believed to have been built by Lord Rama’s Vanara Sena, with instructions from Nala, for Lord Ram to reach Lanka to rescue his wife Sita. According to legend, the bridge was built using floating stones, with name of Lord Rama engraved on it, which made it unsinkable. Apparently, Lord Rama prayed to the ocean, for a path from India to Lanka, so that he could go and rescue Sita from the clutches of Ravana, the king of Lanka.

THE STORY: it is said when ravanan kidnapped sita and took her to lanka, sreerams vanara sena ( monkey troops) sought to build a bridge for rama to reach lanka. They wrote rama in each rock and placed it in the sea where the stones floated over the water, ultimately forming a bridge to lanka for rama to rescue sita.

ധനുസ്സിന്റെ അറ്റം എന്നാണ്‌ ധനുഷ്കോടി എന്ന വാക്കിന്റെ അർത്ഥം. രാമൻ സേതുബന്ധനം തീർത്തത് ഇവിടെനിന്നാണെന്ന് രാമായണം സൂചന നൽകുന്നു. ഹിന്ദു പുരാണ/ഇതിഹാസ ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങൾ പ്രകാരം, സീതാ ദേവിയെ വീണ്ടെടുക്കാൻ ശ്രീരാമൻ ലങ്കയിലേക്ക് സേതുബന്ധനം നടത്തുമ്പോൾ പണി തുടങ്ങാൻ തന്റെ ധനുസ്സ് കൊണ്ട് അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തിയിരുന്നത് ധനുഷ്‌കോടിയുടെ തെക്കേ അറ്റമായിരുന്നു എന്ന് ഐതിഹ്യം. യുദ്ധാനന്തരം തിരികെ വരുമ്പോൾ രാവണന്റെ സഹോദരനും രാമഭക്തനുമായ വിഭീഷണന്റെ അപേക്ഷപ്രകാരം, ഭാരതതീരത്തെ ലങ്കയുമായി ബന്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്ന സേതുവിന്റെ ഒരറ്റം ശ്രീരാമൻ തന്റെ ധനുസ്സിന്റെ അറ്റം കൊണ്ട് മുറിച്ചുകളഞ്ഞു. ലങ്കയിൽ നിന്നും രാക്ഷസന്മാർ തിരികെ ഭാരതത്തിലേക്ക് കടക്കാതിരിക്കുവാൻ വേണ്ടിയായിരുന്നു അത്.

പൗരാണികകാലത്ത് 'മഹോദധി' എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ബംഗാൾ ഉൾക്കടലും, 'രത്നാകരം' എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ഹിന്ദു മഹാസമുദ്രവും സംഗമിക്കുന്ന രാമസേതുവിലെ പുണ്യസ്നാനം (സേതുസ്നാനം) രാമേശ്വരതീർഥാടനത്തിന്റെ മുന്നോടിയാണ്. ശ്രീരാമൻ നിർമ്മിച്ച രാമസേതുവിന്റെ അവശിഷ്ടമെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന, ഏകദേശം പതിനെട്ട് കിലോമീറ്റർ നീളത്തിൽ ശ്രീലങ്കയോളമെത്തുന്ന പാറക്കെട്ടുകളുടെ ഒരു നിര ധനുഷ്കോടിയിൽ നിന്ന് ആരംഭിക്കുന്നു.

ഭാരതത്തിലെ ഹിന്ദുവിശ്വാസപ്രകാരം, കാശി തീർത്ഥാടനം പൂർത്തിയാകണമെങ്കിൽ രാമേശ്വരം ക്ഷേത്രദർശനവും സേതുസ്നാനവും കൂടി പൂർത്തിയാക്കേണ്ടതുണ്ട്. സംസ്കൃതത്തിൽ സേതു എന്ന വാക്ക് പാത, പാലം, മാർഗ്ഗം മുതലായവയെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ആധുനികകാലത്ത് സേതു എന്ന വാക്ക് കൂടുതലായും 'ലങ്കയിലെത്താൻ ശ്രീരാമൻ നിർമ്മിച്ച പാലം' എന്നതിനെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കാൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു
