Thank you for taking the time to make this.🙏🏾

It hits very close to home. I just tuned 46, and over the last couple of months of looking into this have become convinced I have undiagnosed ADHD.

I am a natural skeptic and hesitate to "self diagnose" but I check like all the boxes. Everything you've said here as well as things I've seen/read from othe doctors.

I 100% unknowingly started self medicating with weed when I was about 17. Almost 30 years and countless relapses later(two weeks sober at time of writing) and still struggle.

I also had issues with other substances over the years, ironically specifically with the uppers. My DoC til it would've killed me was Ecstasy which at the time I did it was cut heavily with methamphetamine.

Thankfully I haven't touched that in years, but it makes me apprehensive about taking something like Adderall.

Anyway, thanks again. I'm glad I found your channel today, even if it took a bad Snap binge and lack of sleep before my night shift to do it 😎

Looking forward to diving into more of your content in the future. Namaste, brother ✌🏾

I can think of quite a few of my patients, these days, who struggled with this exact issue; even one who had severe substance abuse in order to calm himself down, who’s lost most of his cravings since I’ve started him on methylphenidate (Late diagnosis ADHD). This video is really helpful to understand this phenomenon!

Thank you for making this. I work in substance use treatment and have adhd myself and I'm also brown. There too much stigma and misunderstanding in this area and ADHD is constantly overlooked in terms of ongoing management and need for medication. The international consensus statement on the topic makes it clear comorbid ADHD and SUD means more relapses, earlier onset, and worser course of illness. Meta-analysis shows 1 in 2 adolescents with SUD and 1 in 4 adults with SUD. I'd be interested to see future studies on how ADHD underdiagnosis and treatment effects current trends in the overdose crisis and polysubstance use(especially in women). We know that substance use among women is on the rise.

Please speak more on this issue! I have ADHD & Narcolepsy and SUD to opiates and I’m currently taking Suboxone and Adderall, have been for years and my recovery is finally balanced since treating my ADHD & narcolepsy with medication. I ended up with narcolepsy after I got swine flu in 2011 and then meningioencephalitis (menningitis and encephalitis) while I was 7 months pregnant. Yeah…… 💀

I was diagnosed {finally, after years of destroying relationships & opportunities} 2 years ago, &i haven't been properly treated because of a history of abuse. I absolutely self-medicated, therefore i have tried so hard to stay clean & get proper treatment, but the health care industry is full of self-worshipping bigots who look down on addiction, despite being the chosen ones who would be expected to understand addiction, self-medication & the risks of not treating disorders & conditions. They'd (many, not all obviously) rather an addict die on a railroad than be prescribed what could be life saving & give them a chance at happiness and success.

Also, strong ENCOURAGE you to make a series on SUD and ADHD. I find this niche is the hardest to get info on and tools even in the ADHD explosion online. I find SUD programs for adults rarely ever mention ADHD or 12 step/self help groups. I find SUD patients severely underresourced.
