How do autoimmune diseases affect eye health? Learn the shocking ways autoimmune disease may be causing eye and vision problems! Including dry eyes, uveitis, and blurred vision!

Autoimmune diseases can significantly impact the health and function of the eyes, giving rise to a range of ocular manifestations and diseases. The immune system's misdirected attack on its own tissues can lead to inflammation and tissue damage within various eye structures. Conditions such as uveitis, Sjogren's syndrome, and Graves' disease exemplify the many ways autoimmune disorders affect the eyes. Uveitis, a severe form of inflammation within the eye, can result in redness, pain, and blurred vision. Sjögren's syndrome often leads to severe dry eyes and dry mouth due to immune-mediated damage to tear and salivary glands. In Graves' disease, an overactive thyroid caused by autoimmune responses can induce bulging eyes and eyelid retraction, potentially impacting vision and causing discomfort. These intricate connections between autoimmune processes and ocular health underscore the necessity of comprehensive care that addresses both systemic and eye-specific symptoms, enabling patients to better manage these complex conditions.

I'm a Medical Doctor ( physician) by God's grace and I've researched a lot about dry eyes symptoms over the years because I noticed how frequent it was becoming ( the computer age is a big culprit) . Although there's no evidence of underlying autoimmune conditions ( in most affected people), I found these important things to consider and would recommend it to you all:
1. Vitamin D deficiency is associated associated with dry eyes and so that should be ruled out, especially for those living in countries with limited sun exposure.Vitamin D supplements would be helpful if that's the case ( OTC vitamin D supplements are available but do not exceed 4, 000 IU per day to avoid vit D toxicity, although it's very rare and would take several months for that to happen).
2.. Dehydration - drink enough water per day. Eat enough fruits and veggies
3. Eat diets rich in omega 3 like flaxseed oil etc or take omega 3 supplements . Also eat foods reach in vitamin A eg carrots, moringa has one of the highest vit A components ( more than carrot) etc.
4. Reduce sun exposure to your eyes nad wear sun glasses just as you wear sunscreen on your body
5. BLINK often - due to the internet age, we continuous use devices and forget to blink . Try to limit exposure to these devices by resting your eyes. Meibomian gland atrophy is associated with bad device use habits . Do some eye massages like with essential oils like jojoba oil, almond oil, olive or even coconut oil ( do not put the oil into your eyes ! )
6. Wash eyes out with slightly cold water or do a cold compress ( close eyes as you dip your eyes in cold water cupped in palm ).
7. Use swim goggles when entering into pools or swimming in the sea or any unknown fresh water bodies
8. There's a condition called ocular laboropthalmus ( involuntary eye opening during sleep) which in turn leads to dry eyes. There's a milder form called inadequate lead seal ( has several causes like thyroid eye disease, facial palsies, trauma and cosmetic procedures, but may even be ' normal' if a person has normally large eye balls) can also cause dry eyes especially after waking up from a long sleep or even a nap. You may need things that keep your eyes closed like sleeptite etc . Someone even uses cello tape for this 😅. Get the right sleep goggles though.
9. Get eyedrops for symptomatic relief that target tear production, healing of the cornea and even improves meibomian gland health. I'd recommended this Hylo night eye drops ( it has bit A and corrects dry eyes symptoms 98%, lasts for 6 months after opening and contains NO preservatives. But it may contain peanut oil so avoid if you are allergic, apart from that it's the best . You can get it from your local pharmacy if available or amazon or online pharmacies ). You may consider other alternatives by checking the list of reviewed different types of eye drops by renowned US optometrists.
Avoid eye drops with preservatives especially if you use them more than 4 times per day BUT Benzalkonium chloride and thimerosal formulations should be avoided at all costs.

10. If the above lifestyle modifications doesn't help. Get tested for any underlying conditions like autoimmune conditions, thyroid diseases etc.

All the best, God bless you and peace ✌️

Emergency Room doctors missed Autoimmune Temporal Arteritis in my mother which caused her to go blind in one eye and narrowed the field of vision in her remaining eye. This after she already reported that she had another Autoimmune disease (celiac disease). I personally have been dx with 3 Autoimmune disorders. Autoimmune disease is very serious yet most Doctors do not seem to be educated about the relationships between disease - as the old commercial says "buy one, collect them all".

The shocking truth is that they are not even close to discover a cure not the real cause of autoimmune.

I was just diagnosed with Sjogrens, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fibromyalgia. Sjogrens does cause very dry eyes and mouth, and I also have constant swelling and pain in my parotid glands. I also have type 1 diabetes. Sjogrens is much more than dry eyes and mouth. I'm just learning, and looking for information to learn how to manage my multiple symptoms. I'll be starting an immunosuppressant soon. I have a great Rheumatologist and Eye Dr that I'm working with and am so thankful for!

Back in 1986, at the tender age of 30 something, I suffered a sudden and devastating rupture of the blood vessels of my right eye. Long story short: I did undergo crypton laser surgery but too late to save all of my central and most of my peripheral vision. Despite attempts by the Opthalmologists to find the causation, it remains an idiopathic event. Fast forward : I resemble every conditions' symptomatology you touched on this video. I now have neuropathy due to back issues as well as Small Cell Fiber Neuropathy. I do not have diabetes!!! But also have feet and toes clinically observed conditions that doctors (specialists) cannot diagnose. I have to get DNA testing after being diagnosed with SFN, mainly to identify an autoimmune disease. Thanks for listening...

I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, after 7 yrs developed a condition where my eyes were swelling and busting blood vessels. Opthalmologist asked my medical condition and was sent to vascular eye surgeon. He told me I had Lupus. Was never given name of condition. I had it twice, very painful. Also very light sensitive.

Thanks for sharing. My wife had anterior iritis, around same time with thyroid nodules. The doctors were not sure the root causes, but months before, her gut was not well. So, our hypothesis is leaky gut and gluten. So, she stopped eating anything with gluten, stopped oat meals too.

Her thyroid nodules disappeared in 3 weeks, and her eye needs similar steroid eye drop every hour first 3 days to control inflammation. Grateful that she recovered. A further analysis we found as e.g. modern bread making just use 2 hours to sit the dough, not enough for yeast enzymes to break down gluten proteins to amino acids. Just the learning so far. We eat sauerkraut too every now and then to keep gut healthy. FYR. Blessings

This happens to me I have had serious anterior uveitis flares from rheumatoid arthritis. The first one was triggered when I had to get an abdominal CT and drank gastrografin contrast. I lost my vision for 4 weeks in both eyes. It required heavy daily doses of oral prednisone 60mg, steroid eye drops and dialating eye drops. It was very painful and I had to stay in a dark room. It took 5 weeks to get my complete vision back. I need a broad spectrum immune suppressant to keep my RA and uveitis controlled.

Have degree in Health Ed and a study published on fibromyalgia. Facilitated support group for 23 yrs at hospital. I noticed at about 38 (wear glasses) since grade 8. Am near 70 now. I had to use different glasses every now and then with no changes to see right, I have had fibro over 25 yrs. Finally someone mentioned. The eye has muscles and since fibro is a muscular problem (pain) no wonder the eyes were bothered. So yes eyes are not left out of the body's disease problems.

I cant say enough how much the beef based diet fixed my eyes, man the focusing muscles are bending my old lens more. Dry eye gone, some small hard ball under my eyelid went away. I feel so good 💪

I’ve had Sjogrens for many years. I was treated for Uveitis and Iritis for 4 years or so but I gave up going to the clinics because they had no idea how to fix my eye. I describe a net curtain in front of my eye and I’m still experiencing what I think of as ‘light blindness’

I have severe dry eye, left eye bulging more all the time and occasional mild pain in that eye. I have had hypo thyroid for many years. I have also had alopecia universalis for 20 years along with chronic coughing. I have asthma and allergies for which I get monthly shots. I had a full left hip replacement in 2019 and now my right hip beginning to hurt. I also have vitiligo. Doctors are lost as to what has been happening to me for the last 20 years and they seem not to care very much either. I am a 58 yr old female.

I have secondary Sjogrens due to Lupus, RA, and was recently diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis. I used to wear contacts long before my diagnosis and no matter how many eye drops i used they were always gritty feeling. Since being diagnosed it all makes sense now.

Sorry doc, but you are making the erroneous generalization that all eye doctors are competent and actually give a rip about patient care. Many of us who live in more remote areas are left with amateur night eye doctors, who lack your knowledge and are not willing to refer their patients to a subspecialist when necessary. Moreover, the same bad actors do not keep up with their professional reading of pertinent medical literature. Your patients are fortunate to have access to you.
