Using salt as a disease treatment for goldfish and koi

Although pond fish like koi and goldfish are freshwater fish, there are major advantages to adding salt to your backyard pond.
Enhancement of your fish's slime coat which is their first line of defense against parasites and harmful bacteria.
Reduction of parasites and harmful bacteria found in your pond.
Stress of your fish is reduced and water quality is increased.
For more information about the use of salt in your pond head over to our blog post

This is the salt to use for parasite and disease treatment.

Aeration kit used in the quarantine bucket

The goldfish in the video is still doing quite well as of this writing, and has fully recovered from its injury. Using a 5 gallon bucket to quarantine a fish is ok for a goldfish, however if one of my koi needed to be isolated i would have had to use a bigger container like a holding tank.

If you ever need to quarantine your fish always do these two things
Be sure you keep the tank or bucket covered to prevent your fish from jumping out or predators getting in.
Use an aerator to keep the water oxygenated and moving. This will not only keep your fish alive but also aid in recovery.

Oh, a Wakin, I have Wakins in my pond also, but unfortunately I lost two due to being bloated out from parasites before I know how to do this. Never again, Thank you. A parasite treatment I bought from the pet store did not work for the rest of the fish, so this is awesome.

There should have been more information given on a salt bath. For just one example. If your fish turns sideways. Immediately put back into fresh water or it well die. So please have another bucket full of fresh water from pond with airstone if issues arise. And NEVER leave until treatment is over. Reasons are many and not explained. Also recommendations in comment sections are for the most part incorrect.

Hi. Very nicely tailored video.
I had a new pond built and bought new fish from a seller that was getting rid off. Sellers pond was filled with algae and muddy. At first I thought the Gold fish some of them about 20cm are pregnant due to bulged bowel. Which later realised it could be swim bladder disease. There is a few in my pond now.
I have been asked to add some dose for Chlorine levels due to tap water in pond filled and equally some aquatic chemical been added to encourage some necessary bacterial growth.

1. Looking at your video, can I do the exercise adding salt to my pond?
2. My pond is about 6500 ltr capacity, so am I right in adding 9.5kg salt?
3. Once salt added in pond, do I need to empty the pond and add new tap water 8n circulation or will the salt remain throughout and goes through the filtration process?
4. and if you say that I need to empty the pond, what is the process and if I start to again add 5ap water in, should I start adding the aquatic chemicals from start again doing the process cycle?

Please can you advise

Hi, do you think I can use this treatment to cure red spots on a Goldfish?

We just got the fish from a fish store where we he had been surrendered and we think he has Red Pond Disease aka Red Pest Disease. He def has swim bladder disease. :/

Appreciate the vids

Hey, Since recently (about 4 days) my Koi have really slowed down on the eating:/ only about 4/5 come to eat at feeding time from a pond of around 16 fish. They seem pretty healthy too and I can't seem to find any unusual behaviour other than not being interested in food as much.
You think a salt bath would help?
Thanks

One important thing to remember is NEVER add salt with certain pond treatments that are Formalin/Formaldehyde based, can kill your fish!
If you have a pond treatment ALWAYS check first!
