One of most beautiful and magnificent aircraft ever built. Grumman nailed the mighty, majestic, Tomcat first time out, no alterations were needed as she flew as good as she looked. Perfect pictorial record of one of the all time great fighters and certainly the best looking Navy point defence jet of any maritime military force ever.

The F-14D still would outperform most aircraft in the US arsenal today, and also would outperform most current Russian and Chinese aircraft if it had the AIM-54C phoenix onboard.
Not to mention, because it's radar has a lower frequency than usual for a "search and track" radar, and the RIO has direct access to radar controls (something no aircraft before or after the F-14 ever allowed) It's reasonable to assume it can lock "stealth" aircraft at a significant range, especially considering it can do the rare "Pulse doppler lock" as opposed to the usual "pulse lock" where a target is locked because of it's speed instead of it's "presence" (pulse doppler uses the doppler effect (speed) to detect aircraft)
Not to mention the AN/APG-71 radar on the F-14D had a theoretical range of 400 nautical miles (limited to 200 nautical miles by the system), what this basically means is that it broadcasts a LOT of energy and can therefore see things much more clearly.
Keep in mind the F-16C today is blind beyond 50 nautical miles, we're talking about a radar that is 8 times more powerful than the F-16C radar.

I think the average person doesn't fully understand how superior the F-14D really was.

Luckily my dad had the honor to work on this jet during his tenure in the Navy. My favorite jet of all time, only thing I wish this thing had was thrust vectoring and it would have made it more lethal knowingly it was a badass airplane in the beginning.
