The Tomcat was retired from the U.S. Navy active fleet on 22 September 2006, having been supplanted by the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, the F-14 was only in service with the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force.

Never will there be another Tomcat. F-14 was the pinnacle of American ingenuity. I have read many books by historians on it. It has the most impressive and illustrious 36 years of service. It was still the best thing Navy ever had when it was retired in 2006 especially the F-14D Super Tomcats that were almost brand new.

i don't care how stealthy you make the f-35, it'll never live up to the legend that is the tomcat, this plane is the reason many including myself got into fighter jets, the f-14 deserved to be around for much longer than it did, a stealth fighter will never replace the tomcat, nothing can and nothing will

I was in the Navy from 85-94 and was a aircraft mechanic AMS2 and did one WESTPAC cruise on the USS Constellation. During my career I was in a P3 Orien, H3 Sea King helicopter and F14 Tomcat unit. I loved this F14 unit and wished I could have been one of their mechanics. Because of the skull & bones on their tails we nicknamed them the " Death Dealers."

I really liked the F-14, especially in the 1980 movie The Final Countdown. Looks like a lot of the scenes from that movie are in this video. The Tomcat also has a brief appearance in The Hunt For Red October.

To say the F-14 Tomcat dominated the airspace during cold war, is an understatement. It had all of its opponents running away not wanting to engage with it when they saw Tomcats coming guns blazing at Mach 2+ with wings swept back and with a big weapons load. F-14 Tomcat simply asserted its dominance over the 'Line of death' in the 80s where Qaddafi had said anyone entering the line of death, would be killed. Yet, F-14 Tomcats would go in there establishing the 12-mile international freedom of navigation over the waters daring Qaddafi to send the MIG-21, MIG-23, MIG-25, MIG-17s etc. to come out and play. Needless to say, any engagements resulted in Tomcats getting behind the MIGs very quickly and the MIGs would be allowed to escape due to Reagan 'don't shoot unless fired upon' ROE.
