Late to this one. As a old Marine, I see why the school asked him to come in a cap and gown. It's about uniformity. He already had a graduation ceremony- at boot camp. This is high school. It's not about you, it's about your class. As a Marine, it's always about the others and not yoursrlf, so don't take offense young man.

Ok here it is - I myself am a former Marine "grunt" and Desert Storm veteran. I think its totally cool that this kid finished up HS a semester early and graduated from Basic. I understand that he, like myself, was extremely proud of what he will probably always considers hos greatest accomplishment no matter what else he does. However, his high school graduation is about his class and they graduate wearing their own "uniform" It is not the event to wear his dress blues at. He already had that deal. Much like it would be totally inappropriate to show up at boot camp graduation in your cap and gown. people need to learn that it isn't what they "want" it is what is appropriate and correct. He should know this.

Being a marine myself, you have to understand uniformity. Everyone is in cap and gown. If you were in formation everyone is wearing the same thing. I can see that he was proud to wear his dress blues but you need to follow orders too devildog.

“The country needs to be defended because if no one’s defending the country there’s not gonna be an America” Spoken like a true marine

Hey there Devil Dog, in the military you learned about this thing called the uniform of the day, on your graduation day the UOD was not dress blues it was cap and gown.

Former military here. The kid has newbie-itis and wants everyone to know he's badass military. Believe me, it won't take long before he looks for any excuse not to have to dress up in the uniform when off-duty.

This is like when they wouldn’t let me wear my cap and gown to my basic training graduation.

Everyone is mad except with Marines. We understand that uniformity is something we stand for and this kid is breaking that. Freakin Boot man.

This was roughly 4 years ago. He might be out by now or is a sgt. His company probably gives him a bad time for this

I was just a Boot Lt(2nd Lt) and was asked by a friend of mine if I would take his sister, who had a crush on me to graduation. She had MS and was confined to a wheelchair. I said yes, put on my Dress Blue Officers uniform along with my sword, this was in the 80's, and danced with her and took photo's. I would kneel down and hold her hands and did all the moves for us. She was so happy. Everyone had no problem. She died 2 years later. Will always remember that moment. Also showed up to a father and daughter dance, still in my flight suit, just to hold my daughter hand and dance with her. I had been gone 5 months and she just cried the whole time. As I did.

I thank him for his service. With that said, in the armed forces you’re taught to obey the orders of your superiors. You’re also taught that it’s not about you, it’s about the team.

When the school said that he wasn’t allowed to wear his uniform, that should’ve been the end of the discussion. After he graduated from boot camp, he had a ceremony. It’s unfair for him to steal the spotlight from the other students at his high school graduation.

I dropped out of highschool when I was 16 and joined the Army as soon as I turned 17. As a requirement of my enlistment I had to get a GED or HS diploma to get rank or ultimately re-up. While stationed in Germany, I attended classes sponsored by the University of Washington (state) and received my highschool diploma from that state. I sent a copy of the certificate to the board of education in my state and was issued a diploma from my highschool predated the day my class was to graduate. While I was not able to attend the graduation ceremony I was invited to have my basic photo used for the year book. Some how the photo got lost in the mail and my photo never made it into the year book. It's like others said, your military graduation is more important and 40+ years later, it still carries more weight on my resume. Congratulations brother, you did us all proud.
