Two formations of Russian bombers were intercepted by F-22 Raptor fighters Wednesday after they entered the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone, North American Aerospace Defense Command said.

In a series of tweets, NORAD said that both formations consisted of a pair of Russian Tu-95 “Bear” bombers. The first, which were accompanied by two Su-35 fighter jets and an A-50 airborne early warning and control aircraft, came within 20 nautical miles of Alaska, NORAD said.

NORAD said both formations remained in international airspace at all times, and did not enter the United States’ airspace.

“Intercepting multiple Russian aircraft demonstrates NORAD forces’ readiness and capability to defend the homeland 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year,” NORAD commander Gen. Terrence O’Shaughnessy said in a tweet. “Flying air patrols protects the approaches to our nations and sends a clear message we continue executing our homeland defense missions with the same capability and capacity we always bring to the fight.”

F-22 Pilot: "Attention Russian Federation aircraft, you are approaching the airspace of the United States. Do not enter or you will be fired upon."
Tu-95 Pilot: "Oh, hello Mike, its Yuri."
F-22 Pilot: "Yuri? Haven't seen you in awhile. They have you doing patrols now?"
Tu-95 Pilot: "Nyet. Just getting away from the wife for awhile. You understand."
F-22 Pilot: "Oh do I ever. By the way, Yuri. We've been doing this for awhile. Do me a favor. You ever get the order to let fly with your payload, can you drop one on 221 Wester Street?"
Tu-95 Pilot: "But Mike, isn't that where you live?"
F-22 Pilot: "It was, until the divorce."
Tu-95 Pilot: "Say no more friend. I'll make a note of it."

I think sometimes they are just bored and say to each other "Hey Boris wanna go check how fast the Americans respond?" And the same goes with the US Air force guys where they ask Chad to do the same.

Politics aside the TU -95 is a seriously beautiful piece of machinery.

The F22 is such a sexy bird. True air superiority right there.

I was ships company on the Theodore Roosevelt from 86 to 90. This was a common occurrence. Except it wasn’t an F22 Raptor but an F14 Tomcat. One beside and low, one behind and high. The Bear never overflew directly over top of us, always about a mile lateral and maybe 5000 feet vertically. When we were in the far North Atlantic we saw them once a day, sometimes at night but most in daylight. The sound of a Bear is unmistakable.

That Russian plane is loud as hell, my buddy was on subs in the late 80’s all the way to his retirement in 2013 and he said that u can hear those planes flying 25, 000 feet above you without any special listening equipment.

American pilot to Russian Pilot, "Hey I bet you get tired of flying that big boring bomber, watch this" Pilot Climbs, does a few rolls and then rejoins along side the Russian wing. Russian Pilot "Hey watch this" Plane does nothing for few minutes, American Pilot "What, you did nothing" Russian Pilot "Nyet, I got up had a smoke, went to the bathroom, had some coffee and a danish."

The TU-95 must have a radar image as big as a McMansion.
