Over 10 years ago, a French fighter plane, the Rafale, defeated an American F-22 Raptor stealth fighter in a simulated combat, setting off one of the most controversial moments in aviation history.

The fact the US Govt denied the incident says a lot

The Rafale is an incredibly capable weapon of war. Absolutely a monster of the skies.

It’s wrong when he said raptor killed 6 rafales it was Eurofighter not rafales. Rafale did one shot and the others was an equal elimination 1/1 so rafale wins few times vs a 5th generation

And guess what ? Pierre "ATE" Chuet, ex Rafale marine pilot, complained in his later youtube video that the french pilots could be even better and have more 30 hours of training per year, he also complained that Safran was ok to give them even more advanced reactors, but the DGA (the administration that decides the armies budget) called that an "aviator's whim"; That's just insane, France has currently the best technologies in the Rafale jets they sell to Qatar, India, Egypt but don't want to implement them in the french ones ! we have the smartest armament industry, with the most stupid bureaucrats 😕

Any jet can beat any jet given the right circumstances. No jet is unkillable and it's naive to think it was otherwise.

It's better to lose against an allied pilot in mock comabt! Than in a real battle! It allows both allies to get better!

It doesn't matter how good a plane is, it matters all on the pilot's knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of their aircraft and their opponents. Great example here showing the Rafale pilot knew what the F22 pilot was trying to do and managed to get on his 6. Also a great thing that this was a simulated fight so that both pilots could learn something new so they can use it in the future. Nonetheless, both absolutely fantastic planes.

This French pilot is the master of his machinery. It wouldn’t have been a simple task tactically (nor both physically and mentally) to get himself into a position where he’s about to knock the F-22 right out of the sky. 9G’s come on now!!! This guy is proving himself to be harder than his aircraft. The F22 is unbeatable at the distances where it sees it’s opponent but can’t be seen itself. The closer it gets to the merge then and beyond, the less certain it is of a victory. Once up close it becomes more about the pilot and less about expensive coatings and next generation electronics. Once you can be seen with the naked eye it doesn’t matter how stealthy you are at a distance.
Both aircraft are fantastic pieces of engineering but but on this occasion it has to be Viva La France 🇫🇷

He's not actually struggling, that's an intentional breathing technique for high G maneuvers.

Many make a mistake, they are confused by the fact that the French always call different planes the same name, the Rafale and only they add the version codes, the Rafale is not an old technology, the Rafale is not a technology that is subordinate to the American, Russian or Chinese stealth, on the contrary, the Rafale F4 is the latest technology, and the Rafale F4 is different plane compared to the Rafale F1.

Only the contours of the plane and the name of the plane are the same.

The Rafale F4 is not an inferior plane to the American, Russian or Chinese ones, on the contrary, it is better in many aspects.

For example, American, Chinese and Russian supposedly stealth planes achieve this with design and paint, while in the Rafale it is done by electronic SPECTRA. Likewise, METEOR is the best AIR to AIR missile, the Rafale is equipped with it, as well as with the IRA, which gives it the ability to target stealth planes without problems.

The title should’ve been

" how a Mirage 2000 shot down an F-22 "

The mirage 2000 is an earlier generation single engine fighter, the fact that it managed to shoot down an F-22 is more surprising

When we lose the competition, we said it’s not about the plane it’s about the pilot

I consider both fantastic aircraft, each with thier strengths and weaknesses. Usally the opponent that sees the other 1st has the advantage but that won't always be the case. Pilot skills are definitely a major factor because even the most advanced weapons without the proper traing is damn near worthless.
I definitely applaud both countries for their engineering achievements.

Just because the Rafale could lock onto the F22, saying the Rafale could shoot down an F22 is a long shot. Flares, Evasive manoeuvres, and out right good piloting can still prevent getting hit by a middle. All of which, the F22 raptor is the best at. In the world.

Im sure the F-15 has been defeated many times in mock combat, but to this day remains undefeated at over 100 victories against zero losses in actual combat. Thats the whole point. Theres always a chance of a loss, but the F-22 will likely maintain a similar combat record.

It is the pilot not the plane. I have always been a fan of French planes especially the Mirage but I love the F-22 as well.

Now, that is a dedicated pilot to go so far just to be successful in that dogfight. Though it was a training exercise, the pilot deserves recognition and needs to be an example of just what others can do when they push themselves to and their craft to its limits, excellent job
