A quick tip video on how to check if your VW aircooled engine is running too hot. It's always important to understand if your engine is running at the correct temperature, especially seeing as how Classic VWs don't have temp gauges.

Always be safe when performing this trick - do not touch anything that may cause burns. As always, these videos are intended for entertainment purposes only and extreme care must be taken when working on vehicles.

The one problem with this test is, some people have next to no pain tolerance and others may have a much higher tolerance or may not feel the heat. Next best thing and probably the preferred method, is install a cylinder head temp gauge. The probe is a simple washer that goes on to the spark plug threads. Do this for cylinder number 3. Normal operating range is 350⁰F to 400⁰F much higher and it's not getting enough air flow.

Hmmm...Isn't people tolerance to heat/pain different from person to person? Wouldn't that hinder this trick and render it useless?

Being and engineer, that doesn’t sound every scientific to me. There are too many variables.

So how I found out my '62 bug was running too hot was after a 30 min drive I heard a noise from the engine. When I got closer it sounded like the oil was boiling. So definately too hot

i guess we run hot here in florida in the summer, using a thermal gun aiming at the block just above the oil pump 227 degrees, in summer florida runs in the 90 to 96 easy thats in the shade, ,,,and its a new rebuilt done last week from fisher buggies in tampa, ,,,scary its a dune buggy lots of it is exposed so heat should leave rather quickly ?, ,,,forget about the dip stick !
