When blood gets trapped under your nail, it is called a subungual hematoma. While it is generally not a serious condition, it can cause discomfort and pain. The severity of the situation depends on the amount of blood trapped and the extent of the injury.

If you experience a subungual hematoma, you can try the following steps:

1. Elevate the affected hand or foot to reduce blood flow to the area.
2. Apply a cold compress or ice wrapped in a cloth to help reduce swelling and pain.
3. Take over-the-counter pain relievers, if necessary, to manage the pain.
4. If the pain is severe or there is a large amount of blood trapped, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional may create a small hole in the nail to release the trapped blood.

In most cases, the blood will eventually be reabsorbed by the body, and a new nail will grow in its place. However, if you have concerns or the condition worsens, it is always best to consult a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and advice.

In 1987 I lost my big toe nail when someone stepped back on to my foot. I was wearing high heels with a very open toe and she had on sneakers. It caused my toenail to only be held in place by the skin so the next morning I pulled the toenail off and it slowly grew out. One year later I pulled up a trash can bag and the heavy Galvanized trash can fell on the same toe. I went to the emergency room and they heated a paperclip to red hot and burned through my toenail to let the blood out and my toenail eventually fell off again and a new one finally grew out.

Gymbro threw a 45lbs plate on my thumbnail and now I have this black spot at the bottom of my nail. Guess I'm gonna spend 2024 with it.

Happened to me before. I cut my finger right underneath the nail which made the blood transfer up somehow. it doesn't hurt but instead looks pretty cool!
