I'm stupidly excited for the Mac Studio. i'm a sucker for SMALL COMPUTERS.

Everytime Apple releases a new M-chip, even tho we have some idea of the performance, I still get blown away by it. The value preposition of Apple completely changed since Apple Silicon. Now they're suddenly much more competitive for the price to performance, be it any device iPhone, iPad or Mac. They could've just played really good with efficiency but they didn't and went all out with performance, without overpricing the stuff too much. It's really compelling me to switch to the Mac.

I use Logic Pro and I can’t imagine going with anything beyond an M1 Pro. I am still on a 2017 i7 model that is great, but my wife got the base model M1 MacBook Pro and it’s so insanely strong. I feel like these higher end machines will be great for graphics, 3D, animation, etc., but for a lot of stuff these chips are overkill and it’s fuckin AWESOME

Dave already planning how to get it painted into the right color!

The monitor is actually the most perplexing thing they've announced.

For video/photography professions, that display isn't good enough. QD OLED is coming out and those will completely obsolete LCD (in terms of image reproduction) based technologies for the next few years. For sound related professionals (musicians, sound designers, etc), the speakers will not match the quality of proper studio monitors. The mic will be impressive, but it's not going to sound as good as a proper xlr mic coming out of an audio interface, and I doubt v/o artists will be giving up their large-diaphragm condenser mics anytime soon. The webcam will be better than most aftermarket webcam solutions, but then again, if a webcam is mission critical, because you're a professional streamer or w/e, you would probably have a DSLR hooked up as a webcam. These features made sense in the iMac because that was targeted at mainstream consumers who would be perfectly contempt with integrated solutions that were well above average. I guess as a programmer, or 3D modeler, or other professions that don't need any of these in their workflow, these will be "nice to haves", but what professional is out here buying luxury consumer displays for work?

It really feels like they were making an M1 iMac Pro of sorts, and then half-way through decided that it would be better to beef up a Mac Mini, but didn't want to throw out the work they did beefing up the iMac.

I imagine some people might argue "well maybe it's targeted at novices starting out, and these features are good enough for beginners." Sure, but if you're trying to enter a new field of work, you don't spend $1600 on a display; you spend $300 on a nice, colour accurate, 1080p display, and then spend the other $1300 on w/e is mission critical. If your display is mission critical, you would buy a QD OLED display (current only one on the market is $1300), not a $1000 display with $600 worth of add-ons that don't contribute to your workflow.

"Maybe it's for MacBook Pro users who want a display to dock to." The iMac, which has nearly identical features, starts at $300 less, and has a full computer inside it. The MacBook Pro user could just use handoff to "magically" continue their work on a bigger screen.

I was really hoping for a cut down version of the XDR display, or even a scaled up version of the MacBook Pro pro motion display, but I guess those would have cannibalized the big XDR display, and we ended up with a luxury consumer display.

Probably the singular best thing they've done in years is Apple Silicon. It's driving amazing design and performance with no end in sight. How far will it go?

Small correction: the Studio display hits 600 nits for SDR content. The Pro Display XDR does have crazy brightness numbers but they’re only for HDR content. SDR tops out at 500 nits.

I would like to see you reviewing some of the displays in the world, like all the expensive shit, to the more budget friendly alternatives.

The studio display honestly feels like it was intended to be the new 27” iMac but Apple scrapped that product at some point in the development.

The rest of the world: “We’re in a silicon shortage. It’s a crisis”
Apple: “Let’s equip our monitors with an iPhone chip.”

I just love how Dave squeezes everything into 5 or 6 minutes while everyone else HAS TO go beyond 10!!!

1:34 actually you can treat them like just “1 cpu”, Threadripper are like that, they are a cluster of CCX per die. Ryzen architecture for the most part it’s also like that, that’s how we got for example the 16 core chips that combine 2 CCX in 1 die, this M1 ultra it’s practically the same thing but in ARM form

I’m not sure why this video made me remember how you can’t use iMacs as displays once the CPU becomes obsolete. So frustrating

On paper the studio display is very similar to the iMac display, and the display cost around the same as the iMac. Does that make the iMac a good deal?

For my fellow music producers, you really don’t need the max version. You can do very well with an m1 pro, here’s why :
Single core perf : processing power needed to playback a single track with its effects chain. No big diff between m1 pro and m1 max (even m1 can do the job but there’s a catch…)
Why m1pro and not m1 ? M1 has 8 core but only 4 perf core vs M1 pro with 10 core but 8 core perf.
Multi core perf : ability to playback multiple tracks simultaneously
If i had to pick one config from the entire mac lineup, i would buy the 16’’ m1 pro 10core/16core gpu with 32gb ram for music production only.
Of course the m1 ultra is very impressive, but be prepared to sell your mom for this one 😭

when you consider the fact that a single 3090 right now costs more than the m1 max version of this entire system, it's not just reasonably priced, it's a freaking bargain. beyond that, the fact that it can deliver the same performance (and more) for a much lower wattage is another reason why this is so much more cost efficient. you literally save money by buying this computer. for me, I might as well sell my pc and buy a steam deck for gaming, cause that's the only reason i'm still stuck with windows. anything else, the mac seems to have the upper hand.
