Seems like the real problem with MACS is that they can not keep up with NVDA chips. Instead of doubling an ultra to get an extreme, the second half of an extreme should be all GPU cores.

Seriously a M2 Ultra is still a very powerful and efficient chip.

Ever since the release of Apple Silicon I assumed that the Mac Pro could have more of a grid computing motherboard where you could choose how many processor chips you want. Let’s say it has 8 sockets, and you buy a 4 chip setup. And later install 2 more for an ambitious project.

Sure it should still have a really fast main chip, but for industry workflows like 3D rendering, video exports, transcoding, AI training, database churning, and even stereoscopic VR output, etc. the workload could be spread across several chips that don’t depend on maximum bus speed that is achieved in a one-chip solution. The main chip could handle everything in your face, and hand down background tasks to the grid.

Some tasks that require fast bus speed will hit a bottleneck, while other tasks like 3D rendering will not hit a bottleneck.

Apple doesn’t like desktops because they are a combination of being more durable and less exposed to theft and damage through travel. Macbooks get updated faster statistically in part at least due to theses factors. Also, if Apple makes desktops artificially a worse value proposition, why wouldn’t that be reflected in sales of desktops relative to macbooks.

Bro, i am still using M1 16gb 512gb mac mini, and this performs well, editing, programming apps and website, almost 30 plus chrome tabs. No hickups.

If Apple wants a profitable desktop line, it needs to appeal beyond its traditional customer base in audiovisual arts. Unified memory with massive system bandwidth is also very useful in scientific and engineering computations plus LLM training in AI, provided the memory capacity is also high and application software gets ported.

In addition, the system font is too small on high-resolution monitors and, it should be possible to explicitly allocate compute cores to processes like solvers for huge monolithic linear algebra problems (Linux lets you do this).

I'm shocked that we did not see anything on the Macs on this past event. I may still hold out as they may do another release early next year but don't think we will see anything this year.
