The estimate that it saved lives was only made *after* they dropped the bombs. At the time of the bombs, the US was only interested in forcing an early surrender because they could exclude the soviets from these negotiations. If the US waited for the Japanese to surrender from either continued fighting or simply starvation from blockades, the soviets would have time to contribute against Japan, meaning they would have a legitimate seat at the negotiation table, which the US wanted to avoid.
While you could make the case today, and I would disagree with it, it’s actually irrelevant whether or not it saved lives. It was not the concern at the time. Those hundreds of thousands of civilians were sacrificed for politics between the US and the USSR.

I don't really think the Soviets had any interests in Japan. They mostly wanted to expand in Europe but great video as usual.
