I doubt Russia would just sit back after shooting just 1 nuke at Ukraine, and then standing by to watch its country get decimated. As soon as they get intel that America has launched nukes at them and NATO invading they would begin shooting off nukes in every direction. This is a VERY optimistic and best case scenerio for USA and NATO which is very unlikely to go that way.

The first thing to note here is that there is no way in all possibilities that Putin is dumb enough to just nuke and then sit back leisurely enjoying his day. Also Russian allies, China, North Korea wont just sit back at this point, they might start lunching nukes themselves, cuz they know that after Russia losing they wont be able to maintain the power equality and also North Korea would also be by South Korea and its allies.

This scenario falls apart if anything is detected early. The problem with nuclear war is believing that it is winnable.

Just my opinion: As it pertains to Ukraine, I don't think any American President would launch nuclear weapons at the Russia mainland, if America was not directly attacked with nuclear weapons first. Mutually Assured Destruction would follow suite, and the trajectory of mankind would radically change for the next 200 years.

How rapidly can they change targets for a Minuteman? I know in the old days they were pretty much hard coded but the introduction of the command data buffer system, , or whatever they call it, allowed them to change. Can they be changed in the 20 minutes or so after the President has identified where he wants to hit?
