1 BIG SECRET To The SmartThings App Migration!

The SmartThings app migration has a ton of you concerned, and rightly so! This is a time where your SmartThings based home automation is going to potentially change and where you're going to have to do a little work. Depending on your set up, it might take a lot of work too.

However, today I'm going to give you a pretty big secret that allows you to deal with this migration in the simplest and easiest of ways. I'll also be sharing exactly what the migration accomplishes and how you can deal with those things before you hit that very scary migration button!

So let's get #SmartThings working for us again, get this #app #migration over with, and get back to more important things.

Thanks for watching, and Don't Hate, Automate.

If you have a more involved implementation of ST, I recommend you do NOT hit the migrate button. Instead, as mentioned here, go into the new app and build up NEW automations or use webcore for logic for the automations to fire off the new STHM. Be aware some have experienced problems with automations that rely on presence and/or mode AND turn on and off a mode in the same automation. There is more on this in the Smartthings FACEBOOK group. Mine is all working perfectly now but it is not as clean and easy as some might tell you. AND .... it is not as BAD as some might tell you.

Thanks. I was scared but now it's done. Without your video I was too uncertain

My smartthings all stopped working 2 nights ago. The hub seems to have updated to the latest firmware and everything reconnected and worked perfectly by the morning. Seems to have switched from cloud to local control with zigbee that repairs itself now. Had to re add everything to the rooms in alexa and it all is good again. Just wish Feit bulbs were directly integrated with smart things so everything would be local. Thanks for sharing.

Good review man. Was easy as pie for my setup. Glad that the new app is finally matured.

I deleted my post and I probably should say sorry. After I got around one small snag I realized it's actually kind of easy to use. But that one's small snag cost me hours of frustration. Seeing though that I was stuck I had nowhere else to go but to dig into the app I figured it out. Now I'm up and running and using the new smart apps. It's nice to have my door locked by itself those types of things. Thanks Brian You're a good guy!

So well done. I didn't hit the MIGRATE button. I just started using the new app. I did have to manually update/create STHM in the new app. Excellent video. Excellent production values.

Great Vid Brian. Did mine a few weeks ago. I had just a few more things to do. Mainly around life 360 which is not supported in STHM and Automatons. BigTalker2 and echo-speaks lost some functionality. Used Webcore and Virtual switches to fix and now up and running. I did send smartthings a recommendation for more options in the guest lock setup. We don't need a notification every time someone puts in the code. Thanks Again Brian.

What happens after Oct 14th? I can't migrate for a number of weeks and I'm already past this deadline...

I migrated and it had some issues. Then I think amazon Alexa must of updated in preparation for smartthings now my announcements when the door senses are opened don't work. they show up as sensors but are now disabled. is there a way around it so I can get it to say 'door opened' working again?

Brian, the new app still doesn’t have all the functionality of the classic. I keep having to revert to the classic to get some things done.
Grabbing a second point while I’m here, how do you handle Tuya devices that are not visible in ST? They’re visible in Google Home but don’t want to appear in ST. How does the brains trust trigger these devices from ST?

I enjoy the funny captions in the break away videos. Keep doing that. I haven't done this yet but I guess Echo speaks and big talker are not compatible with the new app.

With the new changes, my alexa announcements have stopped. They were triggered by ST contact sensors opening and closing. I can’t find a way to make that work.

Hey Brian; I love your videos, super helpful in a confusing automation world. Keep up the good work. I updated my smartthings to the new app there say mid last weekish and it won’t let me link my account to google assistant anymore are you aware of any incompatibility post migration?

Love your channel 💪🏼 question for you my friend, Do you know a good simple system that will allow me to turn my water valve off if a leak is detected using SmartThings ?

Nice informative video as always. I'm sorry to go off topic but do you have any information on the Smartthings and Smart Life integration yet? I check it everyday to see if it works yet but unfortunately nothing yet.

This is just another of the big list of reasons I am leaving SmartThings and have everything moved over to hubitat. Besides the issues that I get an email for every three days, the new app is terrible. I have to retrain my entire family how to use, and all of the features are in different places. Not only those problems, but I have lost control of my Samsung TV that previously allowed me to turn on and off. Granted it's an older TV but still you don't break things that work. The local control of hubitat is considerably faster and more reliable!

Little about my change-over was easy. Home automation is not my hobby, but not new either. I had an extensive x-10 system with Home Seer a lifetime ago. I'm sure you would laugh at the things I had trouble with. Still rebuilding. Had trouble with Alexa integration, cell phones as presence sensors, understanding the change in home moniter. Like the differences in "away mode" and "armed away mode." Once you figure stuff out it's not hard, but sometimes it takes hours to get there. From the large numbers of postings I'm not alone. I understand things have to change in order to grow. I'm sure I will grow to love the improvements. For now though, its a huge time eater.

Because I am recent to smartthings I started using the new app first. I only started using the classic app when I started using IDE and virtual switch app creater. Everything I use is in the new app, but will I lose my connection to IDE?

This video alleviated some of the concern about this migration, I'll give it go, hoping things don't break.

As great as the new app is, it was disappointing that I had to use the classic app to switch on things like the virtual switch app creater. These things should have been accessible in the new app initially without needing the classic app to turn them on.

I guess I'm luckier than people who have been using the classic app for years, but functionality shouldn't be lost or less in the new app compared to the classic app.

Thanks again for another great video.

what is the difference between a smartthing hub and smartthings mesh router....do you know of a smart deadbolt door lock that works with the smartthings app but DOES NOT require a hub?

Hi Brian will this mean big changes in webcore in the long run?
also, do you see them making v2 users go to v3 hubs?
