How to Be a Better Person in 2018

Making resolutions to be a better person is a hugely important activity - even if we can't always stick to every last one. Here is a list of suggested moves for how to be a slightly nicer person to live around in the new year.

FURTHER READING

“Why does being ‘a good person’ have such a bad name? In the modern world, the idea of trying to be good or kind conjures up all sorts of negative associations: of piety, solemnity, bloodlessness and sexual renunciation. It’s telling that ‘wicked’ has even become a term of praise.
And yet the project of being good is as vital, or even more important, for the individual and society as is the project of being healthy. Yet while we have no problem with going to the gym to get fitter, it sounds deeply weird, even creepy, to suggest that one might ‘work’ at being better or nicer…”

An emotional resolution for everyone:
Stop thinking you can force other people to change. Instead, try to be their inspiration, set an example, and then let them find their own way. When we better ourselves, we make those around us better.

My resolution is to stop refusing to talk about my feelings. This past year, whenever someone’s made me uncomfortable or upset, I’ve always ignored it and just let it happen, thinking that they didn’t mean to offend me and all people make mistakes. This has only lead to people walking all over me and being less and less respectful towards me because they think it’s okay. Next time, I’ll remind them that I deserve respect and certain things make me uncomfortable, but I still enjoy being friends.

A lot of comments about cringe and bad acting. I love that about these videos. They are not trying to be glamorous and shiny, easy to consume. The media does enough of that and it doesn't help.

The whole point of this video is to have empathy, that's it.

You know what's particularly great about this film? You can see what being emotionally intelligent actually looks like. Of course the theory is important, but being able to show this to your partner and going "I want to have a conversation like that" is a required resource.

Think you meant for the title to be: How to be better in a relationship. Where's the love for the loners?

My one resolution is to try often to detach and turn on my internal observer function where I try to watch my behaviours as if seeing myself by a spider on the ceiling. “There he goes doing that again.” Maybe I can learn to be less emotionally driven if I recognize sooner when I’m being a butt.

I am completely enamored with the female protagonist in this video. She is so cute, I melt.

I wish everyone could and would do that. I wanted to talk to her for so long. I wanted to resolve things. I wanted her to talk about things that bothered her so much. But it never actually happened. We both are bad at resolving things. When she wants to tell, i can't handle and vice versa. There are somethings that you can't make happen by sheer will, there are somethings which actually are out of our reach. It just doesn't happen like this. I really wish it would. But i give up from today. I want to start new and fresh. Can't drag this dysfunctional relationship with her. Hope she finds someone amazing and makes it work. All the blessings for her.

Happy New Year everyone.

Self-compassion includes treating yourself like you would treat a good friend with the kindness, respect, and forgiveness we all deserve

Something I struggle with, especially in relationships, is perfectionism. I'd like to resolve to not need every single thing to be perfect in order to find a situation acceptable. In short: to Let Go. No person, job, choice, or outcome will ever be 100% perfect, and accepting flaws in life will lift an enormous psychological weight from my existence. Thank you, to those who run this channel, for inspiring us to think and for having such a positive and uplifting tone. Your videos are sunlight on the dark side of the moon; fresh, cool wind for the soul in this societal Bog of Eternal Stench (hail the Goblin King).

The comments shows how far people are from that state of inconditional love, but don't worry, it will come, for each one of you !

Best way to improve is to practice mindfulness as much as you can being in the higher consciousness state will improve your life on every level, everything else tends to fall into place after u implement that.

It's hard to find a guy who's willing to just sit down and talk about feelings for so long

What a wonderful gift for this first day of the year. Even after 45 years of marrriage, this touches me to tears. And with the lovable idiot in mind, we are still striving and forgiving. Thank you.
