It's amazing in how many ways the U.S. had or could have had an edge over production of other countries' necessities but lost many of them in the search for cheaper labor around the world instead of keeping the production of the products and labor at home.

My dad is in the process of cleaning out a river in Likasi DRC so that he can sell the cobalt that was dumped in there during the 1920s. Cobalt used to be mostly useless back then so they clogged up a bunch of rivers.

One way we could lessen the impact of chip shortages is to remove the planned obsolescence. Phones and tablets would work perfectly well for years and years longer if we did that.

Very interesting and well made. What I’m missing is the developments around high end microchip machines from ASML that TSMC uses. The Dutch company ASML produces those machines. The US has forced ASML through the Dutch government to stop supplying those machines to China. More developments likely to follow.

You forgot to mention the ONE machine in Netherlands, that currently is the only one producing the most advanced chips. The company that owns it, . Has incredible power

I have found myself thinking about the microchip issue and when I would talk about it, ppl would look at me like I had a second head on my shoulders

Not every Lithium battery needs Cobalt: LiFePO4 batteries don't, and they can handle about 5 times as many cycles as Lithium Ion before they start losing capacity. I know Tesla has been using them in at least some of their Model 3s for a while now. That nitpick aside, I love your work: thanks for all of the great content!

In England they would be called microcrisps

It amazes me how much quality content that you produce

Amazing video, like always. One thing I'd just like to nit-pick though - as you said yourselves, microchips are far from trivial.

not to mention, it takes 100 tons of earth to mine 1 ton of cobalt; the environmental impact is huge but the green energy people don't talk about that

While currently most Battery Electric Cars use Cobalt as a high energy dense active material, there are already solutions with other Battery Cell Chemistries that no longer use Cobalt and their are sold today already. Not working for smaller devices/batteries in consumer electronics yet.

Great video more people need to be aware of this

Nickel based lithium ion batteries have greater energy density than cobalt based. Ergo, resolving the cobalt shortage will be a matter of innovation as opposed to a resource war.

I'm waiting for landfill mining. Eventually we're gonna start digging up our old Gameboys and MP3 players for this stuff.

Having a TSMC chip production facility within the USA’s boarders is a really big deal.

"the demand for electronic goods outweighs the ethical concerns" - this hits deep

Could you guys do an episode covering the population crash that many are saying will occur in China around 2030ish, what the implications of that approaching catastrophe, how it will impact the rest of the globe, and whether or not it would increase or decrease the risks of China launching an invasion of Taiwan? Please? Pretty please with a delicious cherry on top?
