People have the audacity to say "just stop"
It's like being addicted to a drug. You can't stop that easily.

There are multiple reasons why a person commits self-harm:

• To punish themselves

• For the adrenaline rush

• To feel something (sometimes being depressed, everything feels numb)

• To distract themselves from other feelings

• To feel relief after pain

• They can also use it as a cry for help

There are many more reasons and all of them are valid. The person may have one or more than one reason.

Personally, I do it because I hate myself very much and I hate when something goes wrong because it shows me that I am not enough, and since I don't know how to manage my emotions correctly, I get angry with myself and chop my arm.

But after half an hour of continuous cuts, I stop to rest and feel that sweet relief, that moment when your body slowly stops feeling pain... At that moment I can finally breathe and relax.

Repeat the cycle every time something bad happens in your life and that's how you get a strong addiction that you can't quit.

(I've been dealing with this for 10 years)

*when you realize you’ve been doing almost all of these for several years without knowing it was selfharm*

Love how I see this right after covering myself in blood.

also, they will probably wear long sleeves, even in hot weather. if they do it to their arms.

I used to bite myself, slap myself, and pull my hair whenever I was stressed when I was a kid, I thought it was just some weird thing to cope that humans do turns out I was just unhealthy

I stopped harming myself when I was 12, because my Mom saw my arm while I was sleeping, and her reaction broke my heart, so I decided to get help, I am now 17, I have a great therapist, and I haven't cut since, not even once ☺

All these people in the comments feeling hopeless, I understand, I’ve been self harming since 7th grade and now I’m in 11th grade, no matter the reason you are self harming it is unhealthy, and you know that, you think it’s the only way to know how you’re feeling or express how you feel, and I know it’s hard to stop and resist it, something that helps me from stopping myself is putting what I use somewhere that will inconvenience me to get up and go get just a little tip, I’ve been clean for around 5 months now and lately it has been getting hard but I’m still going and I know you can get through this hard time in your life, your feelings are valid and in case you haven’t heard it in a while I love you

If you're a parent seeing this, if your kid self harms DO NOT HESITATE to get them a therapist. I know finding an available therapist can be hard but don't stop searching. A good place to ask is to go to any normal doctor who may be able to diagnose ur child even with only the physical symptoms or connect you to a therapist or ask friends if they have any connection to one.

Just because they stopped self-harming doesn't mean that they are mentally in a better place. Self-harm is a way to cope with things in life and if you take that coping mechanism as bad as it is, you leave your child with nothing to help deal with these emotions. I don't mean you should be an enabler, God no. But you should try helping them learn better coping skills and as I said GET THEM A THERAPIST. You might think "they can tell you everything" but that isn't enough.

Tldr; GET YOUR KID A THERAPIST.

As a kid I thought that I would only have a scar on my lip from accidentally falling, now I look back at that memory and chuckle as my arms are covered in bite marks and scars.

Don't tell anyone... I scratch and pick to the point of bleeding, no joke. I think it might be due to my anxiety and depression. So if anyone is reading this, I'm not lying, and you're not alone

I didn’t know hair-pulling was a form of self-harm. I have trichotillomania and I pull out the hair in my head all the time.
