Is Love a Choice?

While it may be a struggle sometimes, the essence of Christian love is not choice, duty, or obligation. It overflows in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.

Love produces fruit just like faith produces works but to say love is the fruit it produces is wrong just as saying faith is works is wrong. Love is a fruit of the Spirit and the works are an overflow of His influence, not just a decision. I'm glad someone is saying this. People want love to be merely a choice because we can control that but if it's a disposition of heart as well it's beyond our control. In our pride we want love to be something we can control when in fact it's a byproduct of abiding in Christ. Jesus said apart from me you can do nothing, that includes choosing to love.

God is Love therefore love is eternal. It is not a choice. It is a gift from God. The only choice man has is REPENTANCE

Help me understand this one please. If love is not a choice, why does Jesus tell us to love our enemies? Despite our feelings towards them are we not to choose to be affectionate towards them and care about their well being?

Ok. love IS a decision. It's obviously not "I chose to love you, jerk" because the word "jerk" implies pride (among other things) in the speaker which is never a part of love (as per 1 Corinthians 13). Moreover, Piper says at the end that love "is humble service to one another" which itself is a decision.
