Why isn't Ukraine throwing everything into its counter-offensive? | Sitrep podcast

Award-winning Sitrep brings you discussion and analysis on defence, foreign policy and the stories affecting the British forces, presented by Simon Newton.

Ukraine formed 12 brigades, each up to 5,000 soldiers strong, to take back territory from Russia. So far it's only committed around a third of those forces.

Professor Michael Clarke and Forces News Ukraine correspondent Simon Newton discuss the military logic, and whether the next phase of the counter-offensive has actually already started.

Is there a better way to handle complaints from members of the Armed Forces?
Germany's Armed Forces Commissioner tells us how surprise visits and access-all-areas help her make a difference.

And is the pen really mightier than the sword? We explain the concept of 'weaponised narratives', how they've been used to overthrow governments, and ask whether words can do the same job as warfighting.

Same day as this post, my Nephew (ex RE) is currently in Ukraine clearing mines - has been for a couple of weeks now.

As a layman and an observer i would hazard a guess that, while facing an overwhelming and extremely well defended enemy, at the same time as being purposefully under-supplied over an extended period, they are simply taking a cautious and measured approach rather than simply sacrificing their personel to placate a bloodthirsty and impatient press?

Another Picketts Charge is what some seem to be calling for. That never turns out well. Running through dense mine fields is a bad idea. If we'd given them the aircraft they asked for then they would be able to protect their troops as the demined the fields and roads they need to pass through. Right now they are vulnerable to helicopters and aircraft so the demining is costly and slow.

The answer to this question is: because they are not stupid.

Simple, Ukraine has generals that run the army not a bunch of media people who just want a story to make money.

It's more like 38 million in Ukraine right now. As for the full use of the counter attack reserves... I don't think we are going to see it happen this year. I hope I am wrong, but it just does not look like Ukraine feels it is practical to throw in everything they have built up for the counter attack. Turns out they need more artillery and air defenses than they expected in order to help the forces move forward.

Most of the hype for a fast campaign came from media outlets like yourselves, most interviews you did with either ex or current persons in the military mostly said this will be a slow grind, which is as much as i expected also.

Why? Say, for the same reason it was taken out of the peace treaties last year. And no, all that Ukraine has is the teenagers that aren't sllowed to travel now, and their grandfathers, just like promised, to fight to the last Ukrainian. Ukraine also has the PROMISES for newer better arms, but that's a bird in the sky, it has yet to land on their shoulder...

I don't like the tone...I am not sure the audience you seek to inform...however, most of us already comprehend.
I would say that only anti-ukraine factions we iuld try and put a negative and demeaning twist...

Because Ukraine has very little to no air defense over 95% of the country.

AND HERE IS THE ANSWER:

UKR army is right now losing around 800-1000 men a day.
The offensive, just like General Zuluzni predicted, was a fiasco.
Either they go back to negotiating table, or the Ukraine army by spring 2024, will stop existing..

A lot of group think in this talk. Ukraines plans are this, that and the orher. While the enemy does what? Some of the most amateurish points which fail to recognize that Ukraine did not even prevail agsinst DPR or LPR.
