Mr. Dahl (Ronnie), a very good idea to put forward. Practical off-roading includes RANGE! In the S.W. US, we took a trip on the KOKOPELLI trail last year, and the big engine, big tire vehicles ALL had to leave the trail 1/2 way through for a petrol station - but the little 6 cylinder Jeep with excellent gearing was able to go the distance - with a refill! Well done!

Haven't you heard, 40's are the new 35s.

I find it interesting how different countries have different opinions on what’s considered a big tire. In the us, most factory 4x4s have at least a 32” or 33” tire. Some even coming with 35s. However, over here, it’s increasingly common to see most 4x4s with 35s, 37s, and 40s.

Went up from 31's to 33's on my troopy the day I bought it. Then tried 35's. 2 inch lift, I did like the extra clearance off road but, on road? Not so much fun. Back to 33's. Works well for me, touring or low range fun.

I did more offroading in my cortina than most "hardcore 4x4ers"

Greetings from Pretoria. Truth is 33 inch tyres are also too much for a bush tourer - Cruiser or Hilux. A rock crawler...maybe. A bush/ bushveldt tourer...no. It'll cost you in handling, fuel consumption and more. 99.9% of your kms will be on tar, dirt, sand roads and tracks. And you'll get over the obstacles you need to very well. If you want to be a possuer, or be a competative obstacle vehicle; fairy-nuff, and while you're at it, get a Brazilian butt lift! If you're a real world practicle bloke, who wants a capable off road tourer, forget it...

with the 4/10 gearing. 35 in tires are great . on the rd i can do 65 mph ( top end for the motor)
and lowering down to 5 psi off rd the tires wrap around rocks for a great grip.

I had 35 in goodies in my truck for a while but when it came time for getting some replacements I found locally a set of 33s by kumoh road ventures for a really good price and never regretted it since

my cj-7 runs on 35 by 12.5 inch tires. 4-1/2 in spring lift.
no body problems at full extension / compression.
i can X my axles and still have all 4 tires on the ground.
i have 4.10 gearing. Detroit locker in the rear,
arb locker in the front.
a older amc 258 motor adjusted with multi point fi out of a 1994 jeep.
a 1960 sumpthing T-18 trani. (6.5 to 1 compound first gear)
twin sticked dana300 T case.
and can do 65 on the freeway.

Ronny, I've heard you say a couple of times that fuel economy suffers when you go up tyre sizes... did you calibrate the odometer as well? If you don't, it will seem that you're not going as far on a tank as you actually are. Please let us know that you are comparing calibrated distances when you say that.

Ran 37’s (road) and 38’s (off-road), with 4.88’s on my old sprung over shorty. Did NW WA in that beast which was a lot of fun. Truth is it drove better out bush on the 33’s with a 2” lift. In the 33” guise I used to run with a single cab patrol running 40’s back in the Porter Rd days many moons ago. 33” with a 2” lift will take you everywhere and then some, especially with lockers. I wouldn’t bother with anything bigger than 33’s anymore.

I have a Wrangler, would be rude not to have 35s

It’d be even more capable if it wasn’t a Land Cruiser!😂

33's are the best all round option.
If you can't do something with 33's it's probably a driver capability issue
