this really makes me wish that school taught intestines as ribbons rather than ropes

First time I'm hearing about this body wall. I thought the intestines just sat there unattached to anything apart from each end of course. This is so comforting. I often wondered why they dont get tangled. Now i know.

These blood vessels coming off the GI tract coalesce into a single vein which feeds into the liver, called the hepatic portal. This allows the liver to detoxify and stabilize serum levels of ingested substances, whether food, drugs, or alcohol, and is known as “first pass phenomenon.” In cases of cirrhosis, where there is scarring of the liver, blood flow into the portal is slowed and mesenteric congestion results. Fluid leaks from the mesenteric vasculature, and accumulates in the peritoneal cavity. This is called “ascites, ” and is the reason behind the typical bloated bellies that people with liver failure often exhibit.

This is so interesting. Thank you for sharing this information with us all. I’m currently in school to become an RN, so this was very helpful. I will definitely follow you to see more of what you have to share with us.

I always that the small intestine was basically a 15 foot long expandable hose. seeing how the mesentery is connected to it changes the whole concept for me now. this stuff would have been so interesting to look at when I was young and not a senior in the time of life when so many things were breaking. Actually I like looking at this stuff now because it gives me more information to think about when I speak with my doctors.

The intestines being tethered to the back of the abdominal cavity is one of my favourite anatomy fun facts that people never know.

I recently was diagnosed with stage IV Ovarian cancer....I also had 4 large masses, one of which was in my Mesenteric had debulking surgery, which means removing all the masses, a complete hysterectomy (cervix included)....when i woke, I was told they got it all EXCEPT for one in my Mesenteric....so now I have 3 more rounds of chemo to go through....and hopefully after my repeated scan after the 3rd round I'll have a zero count!!!

I used to think--as probably many do--that it's one long sausage, and the blood vessels run along the whole thing. This led me to wonder, when in the course of surgey the intestines have to be temporarily pulled out of the abdomen, how does the surgeon know the proper sequence to "fold" it back in. Of course, since the mesentery exists, it's kind of clear which loop goes where.

You are doing the best. I hope that you know everybody who answers. You thinks that you're the best teacher. The knowledge that you give is helping the old people. And the young, the only thing we have to do is listen and watch. Thank you very much. Thank you very much

Whoa. Finally the intestines make since! Its always presented as just some long hose that magically somehow absorbs everything but just by freaking magic.
Thanks for showing what SHOULD be basic knowledge.
