The Truth About Soy and Fertility, Man Boobs, PCOS + Acne!

A quick google search will have you convinced that SOY causes everything from infertility to gynecomastia (aka man boobs). But the perpetrators of these headline-grabbing articles provide absolutely NO evidence to back up their claims.

In today's video, the second of my three-part series on soy and health, I'm breaking down the science on the connection between soy and fertility, men's health, PCOS, and acne.

I investigate all of the outrageous claims against soy including that it causes infertility, "man boobs," PCOS, and lowers testosterone...or raises testosterone, depending on who you ask. Yep, both of these contradictory statements are floating around out there!

Make sure to check out the other two videos in my series too:

Thank you!! For what it’s worth, regarding soy and fertility, I have been a vegetarian (28years) and vegan (6 years). Soy has been a staple in my diet for most of my life, starting from childhood, and I went on to have 6 healthy children.

People of my country eat soy and soy products like tofu, tempeh, tauco, soy sauce, soy milk almost everyday since centuries ago and there is no proof of infertility. We have the fourth biggest population in the world. Until my grandma’s generation, people still have at least 5 kids. My grandma even gave birth 14 times in her life. Once every 2 years!!! How amazing was that! During my parents’ generation, the government even used to have a birth control program to limit people to have 2 kids only, because people keep having kids. A lot of kids. Now people generally have 1-3 kids, but it’s not due to the infertility, but because of the high cost of raising children. Eating soy leads to fertility is bullshit. Soy products are like staple food that we eat everyday. Look at my country, look at China, don’t our population shows enough evidence that eating soy regularly doesn’t lead to infertility?

i just decided not to listen to any of what experts or studies say about tofu, some say its good, others say its not. im totally fed up with this contradiction, i will only listen to what my own body says, and i have absolutely no issues with eating soy so imma stick to it

Thank you for this! As someone who is wheat/gluten intolerant trying to find ways of getting my protein intake each day to keep my up training I have relied heavily on daily tofu as a staple in my diet, so to be told recently that it’s dangerous for my health to eat so much of it I was terrified and super upset. I’m so relieved to learn it’s not the demon that people make it out to be!

Thank you! I love TOFU but have avoided it for years due to the misinformation around it. Will start incorporating tofu / soymilk back into diet

I and my daughter have pcos..i have experimented w soy..we both daily consumed soy 2 cups of soy milk a day every day..i saw extream change..and im not kidding! And this is no joke...#1 my almost absent periods & poor flow became w soy ..heaver periods cramp..breast changes ...both me and my daughter experienced feeling "emotionally unstable"..this included feeling of extream mood change like sad depressed, crying it really made me think if this is what other women go through ..i dont want it.. we actually decided to quit soy bc neither of us have ever felt like that b4 it was scary! But! My conclusion is.... because my PCOS and high testosterone.. then taking lots of soy and flooding myself with plant estrogen.. which my body was not used to.. was like an internal car wreck...however! It shows me soy can be used like a 》》》》medicine《《《if your TTC and have pcos i think this may aid in having a menstral cycle it could posdibly help you is my guess..you would have to adjust the amount to either certain parts during your cycle or only certain times of the week and consuming only certain amounts..if u have pcos u would need to experiment and find the appropriate amount that aids your health. Im thinking about going back to soy to aid my hormones only and not as a staple food or everyday thing.

It really is funny the amount of misconceptions that blanket "soy" without looking at the specifics. Another case of headline reading. Thanks for sharing the details Whitney!

As a woman with PCOS I have completely cut out all GMO Soy from my diet and I used to only get a period once every 3 or 4 months and now I get my period once per month. I don't think it's the best idea to recommend that people with PCOS consume soy products. Regardless the affects of it found in studies, soy does in fact produce phytoestrogen and anyone with PCOS has too much estrogen. The same goes for Dairy. All Dairy contains Estrogen so you'd want to avoid that too. Whether plant or animal estrogen it's safe to avoid all of it as both of those kinds of Estrogen can mimic our own.
