This song is hundreds of years old, going back to the pirate days. It's an old Irish folk song that's been covered countless times, about a bandit that steals money from Captain Farrell, brings it to his girlfriend, then gets betrayed by her, who ends up killing the good ol' Captain and going to prison. There are different versions, in one it's Captain Pepper and the girls name is Jenny. Metallica covered Thin Lizzy's version, but punched it up a bit.

"Whiskey in the jar" was an old Irish drinking song... Thin Lizzy made a rock version of it back in the 70's and made it a hit. Metallica decided to cover the Thin Lizzy version in 1998 to honor their late bassist Cliff Burton, who cited Thin Lizzy as a huge influence. Burton was a huge fan of (Late bassist/ vocalist) Phil Lynott (They both passed away the same year - 1986).
This was from a collection of Metallica covering their heroes titled 'Garage Inc.' in 1998... included were also covers by Motorhead, Diamond Head, Mercyful Fate, The Misfits, Blue Oyster Cult... as well as some unusual choices like Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Bob Seger, Lynyrd Skynyrd.

This is a classic song that several different bands have covered. If you get a chance, listen the Thin Lizzy version of this also.

many have covered this old Irish song, but my favorite will alway's be Thin Lizzy's version. With that said this version rocks too.

The Thin Lizzy version is still my favorite, but Metallica killed it too!

This song goes all the way back to the 17 Century. Metallica is just our generation’s iteration, along with Thin Lizzy and The Young Dubliners.

Metallica are my all time faves. In my opinion they can do no wrong. You would love their S&M(Symphony & Metallica) album/concert. Totally epic. ✌️🤘

A cover of a traditional Irish song that goes back to the 17th or 18th century.
Many artists have recorded it, including Thin Lizzy.

the only small thing missing from the Metallica version is that haunting guitar riff that permeates the Thin Lizzy version...but I do love both versions!!

Thanks for playing this song guys. If I correctly remember, Jay you enjoy an occasional cigar. James Hetfield, lead singer, is now making cigars. Blackened Cigar "M81" is what it is being called.

There's a great live version of this song performed at Slaine Castle in Ireland in an outdoor show. The audience's energy level is over the top.

Love this one!! Thin Lizzy does my favourite version, but this is fire 🔥🔥🔥

It's an old Irish drinking song so it's no surprise that an Irish pub band like Thin Lizzy would do this song justice 🤘💯😎

As an Irish man I feel it my duty to suggest you listen to one of the traditional versions of this. (possibly The Dubliners☘🙏)

This song is actually a classic Irish Folk song that has been covered by a lot of bands, probably most rock famously by Thin Lizzy back in the day, but there are also some newer versions including this one. The American rock versions have varied the story quite a bit but generally It's a story about a Pirate or Highwayman (robber) who stole a lot of money from a Captain to win the love of a Lady (Jenny, but called Molly here). But the Lady who took the money pretended to love him, but set him up and rendered him defenseless (traditionally she replaced his powder with wet powder) and able to be captured without much of a fight (In the original version the Captain is not killed and captures the Singer). He dreams that his brother who is in the army will come and rescue him before he meets his end in prison. Believe it or not, despite it's dark themes this is a drinking song that was popular in pub sing a longs back in the day. And the Irish are not shy about singing in pubs and almost everybody takes part.. It's part of our culture. Of course as an Irish American who rarely goes out drinking, I can see the virtues, but it would take a lot of ale to get me to sing in a bar. I mourn the culture I never had. Americans don't understand and visitors from Ireland might sing some songs in a pub and not even be that great of a singer, usually passable tho. But the point is not that people are great singers, but that they are sharing a song, and hopefully other people share theirs too or sing along. That is what it's all about. Databyter

I have been to many a music festival over the years with Celtic bands. Can't think one that hasn't covered this song. Always a favorite.

The Thin Lizzy version is the one you need to hear it's considered the definitive version of the song. The song is actually hundreds of years old. It's a traditional Irish song. No one even knows who wrote it. Metallica were actually huge Thin Lizzy fans, especially Kirk Hammett.

Such a classic that so many bands have covered over the generations

Glad someone mentioned that this is an old Irish folk song… I heard an old Irish folk singer doing the older original version in a bar called The Celt in Dublin Ireland… pretty awesome. This was on an album of all covers called GARAGE DAYS RE-REVISITED. Some really wild and good stuff on there including a cover of Tuesday’s Gone with John Popper (Blues Traveler) on the harmonica. Good stuff guys. 👍🏼
