Hey Weavers, in this episode we will be learning about 5 quick release hitch knots. Here is some important information about them.

Exploding Clove Hitch ▶
A recent innovation that was first published in a yachting magazine in 1999. It’s a knot that’s very easy to tie and release. It’s tied simply by placing your rope around an object, making a clove hitch and then inserting a bight through the clove hitch. Would make a good knot for camping tied around a tree for a quick release clothesline or ridgeline. Anywhere a quick temporary tie off is needed. Like all knots tied with a drawloop, security is an issue. NOT TO BE USED FOR CRITICAL PURPOSES, like climbing.

Painter Hitch ▶
The Painter Hitch or Tumble Hitch is often used by Sailors and Cowboys/Ranchers as it is relatively secure when tied, but quick to release should there be a need for a fast release. A painter is a rope that is attached to the bow of a dinghy, or other small boat, and used for tying up or towing. Only use this hitch as a temporary hitch and not used for critical loads.

Highwayman’s Hitch ▶
The Highwayman’s hitch is a quick-release draw hitch used for temporarily securing a load that will need to be released easily and cleanly. The hitch can be untied with a tug of the working end, even when under tension. The highwayman's hitch can be tied in the middle of a rope, and so the working end does not need to be passed around the anchor when tying or releasing.
Until the knot is tightened and properly dressed, the highwayman's hitch has little holding power. The highwayman's hitch is susceptible to capsizing when the pole is substantially larger than the rope diameter. The failure occurs because the second bight sees the force of the standing part, but is held in place by the working part, which has no tension. When capsizing, tension on the standing part pulls the second bight through the first bight. This drags the slip-tuck through, and will release the hitch if the third bight isn't long enough.

Mooring Hitch ▶
It might be reasonable to use a Mooring Hitch Knot to briefly tie up a kayak while getting into it or temporarily tethering an animal.
Quick release hitches are dangerous for a climber rappelling down. Frightened by a sudden slip or jerk, a grab at the adjacent line can trigger a fatal fall.

This so-called Mooring Hitch has been described as being tied loosely around a pole so that the loop can rise and fall with the tide. Even discounting the risk of the loop catching on oysters, barnacles, bolts, and beams, such use must be condemned because it implies protracted use of a knot that cannot be trusted and is also prone to jam.

Quick release slip knot ▶
The Slip Knot is identical in structure to the Noose Knot except that the bight to be inserted is formed from the short end – not the long. The Slip Knot is one of the most frequently tied knots – being used in knitting as the first loop when casting on – where it is called a slip knot but frequently tied as a noose. It can be used as a temporary stopper knot. When a bight is inserted through the slip knot, it is described as slipped. Pulling on the free end releases the bight. In practice, this depends on how much load has reached the bight. With some tightly loaded knots, e.g., a Buntline Hitch, it can be difficult to release and almost impossible to pull the final curve of the bight itself out of the tightened turn.

I think I've been doing the Mooring knot instinctively at work to attach customers' dogs' leashes. I suddenly wanted to actually know what was its name haha. It's cool to learn about more knots of the same type. Thanks a lot for this piece-by-piece tutorial!

Sometimes I’ll use the mooring hitch to tie up my dinghy. It seems to work fine thought it hasn’t really been in a major blow with the mooring hitch securing it. I will usually secure it with a bowline or a rolling hitch. They are probably my favorite knots to secure something to a piling or ring.

Excellent, lots of patience in showing us the step by step too. Everyone should learn at least ONE of these and memorize it…great for camping (tying around a tree) or securing a load on a Pickup etc.
